Description
Wow, here is a good one, one in which I had a whole lot of trouble
obtaining information.
The Supertone psuedonym credited on the record is Duke Lopez &
Havana Club Orchestra, who play "I'll Never Love You" on 78rpm
Supertone 9384.
This was done on Electrobeam Gennett 6894 as "Alfalfa" by Ezra
Buzzington's Rustic Revelers. or it might have been as Russell's
Roving Revelers, I'm not at all certain. I'm pretty sure it was issued as
Russell's Roving Revelers on Champion (15719).
In any case it was recorded in New York City in March of 1929, and is
just great!
There are some of the guys playing who later formed the Hoosier Hot
Shots, but this is not cornball, it is Jazzy. A brass bass played by
Frank Kettering does some great solo work. I think that Ken and
Hezzie Trietsch who later were involved in the Hot Shots group, are
both sitting in, as is Gabe Ward on clarinet.
On the other side, the Baltimore Bell-Hops, a Sam Lanin Band, play
"Button Up Your Overcoat." Tommy Dorsey is on trombone and does
a nice solo. This side was released on Electrobeam Gennett 6815.
This is a terrific record and is in terrific excellent-plus (E+) condition!
