Label/Format: Island - Original full pink format with smooth surfaces. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Two intensely deep pink labels that are immediately striking to view. Side one has a small few small adhesion blisters in manufacture. Purely small air bubbles trapped on application and they are hardly unusual or rare. Two of the freshest and barely ‘used’ labels I have seen on this album. A couple of ultra fine and faint spindle traces only, barely anything noticeable on side one at all and a near connoisseur quality Island record that offers the finest of sound possible.

Cat Number: ILPS 9130.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good solid weight for this one.

Rarity: The first pink copies of this album are scarce and in fine, lightly played conditions quite rare. An album I have heard several times on the original pink format and so many crackle and often distort too. This album seems prone and intolerant of old needle abuse and often is ruined by their effects. This copy looks and plays beautifully with nothing unwanted and for a change too includes a really nice cover. Equally as intolerant of heavy handling or poor storage this one is clean and still quite fresh and shows little of the usual wear on the heavily textured ‘Hessian’ type finish. This is a real strong copy for Fairport fans and Island collectors and the sound could hardly be beaten.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The first post-Sandy Denny album was never going to be easy, but this album excels again with more pure quality folk-rock. With Dave Swarbrick now a full member this seven track album is another Fairport classic and includes the wonderful lengthy track ‘Sloth’. Unfortunately this was to be Richard Thompson’s final album with the band before persuing a solo career and his brilliant influence and songwriting skills were sorely missed after this album. This without doubt is one of the finest pink pressings I have seen or heard, devoid of the usual crackle and clipping so many seem to have. Even clean looking copies of this album can disappoint but few will be disappointed with this one – it’s a beauty.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. An unlaminated gatefold format with a lovely textured finish on the front and back – sometimes referred to as the ‘Hessian’ cover. The inside is smooth. It was printed and made in England by the E. J. Group.

Cover Front: Fantastic looking and still fresh with intense rich colour. Any grubbiness or ageing is very light and faint, and the lack or rubbing to the rough surface or creasing is a massive bonus for the collector. The odd tip or edge rub trace is near impossible to avoid, but little spoils this vulnerable beautifully designed front.

Cover Back: Very similar again and the lack of ring wear is a most welcome change. A faint rim impression near the top edge and any discolouration very faint indeed. Again a little tip rubbing and a hint of a fine crease trace on the bottom left corner. But in terms of this unforgiving ‘Hessian’ cover, this will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: As near perfect as you will ever see and one of the most stunning band pictures ever put on an LP cover.

Top Edges: A little patchy rubbing and small chip, still straight.

Bottom Edges: Light patchy rubbing on the front, more moderate on the back. These traditional storage edges will seldom escape some wear as the surface is vulnerable and prone to any movement or friction.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring light and mild. Record enters on the back edge. The front very slightly overhangs the back as there is a mild tilt on the spine, that has acted as a protection for the more vulnerable entrance, both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A really strong spine too, again few of these escape often with severe rubbing or damage – I have on occasion seen some of these threadbare with barely any ink and no text. So put into context, this is quite impressive. Very solid, straight and thick, a little mild compression and gentle tilt to the right, but folded square, so the edges are parallel and neat. Most of any rubbing near the ends with just the odd small chip to the bottom fold. All the text is present and barely worn – the odd tiny clip only. .

Corners: Moderate tip rubs with fine to very fine shape retained. Again it hardly goes without saying, these are very delicate and prone to wear and rarely escape – this has NO tip-ins.

Cover Summary: An attractive all-round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find significantly better. This impressive and still quite fresh example will please many collectors, but the highly discerning who only want perfection at any cost.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and with few hints to it’s great age, this is date-coded 0570, within a month or so of the album’s issue. A superb Polydor polylined inner that has no creasing and a beautifully clear lining as seen through two pristine window circles. Any discolouration minimal and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): hardly does this justic, and only a whisker off my highest grading with any of the few surface traces or hairlines only seen under bright angled light. Very clean, shiny, intense black and pressed on quite heavy vinyl. A really lovely looking (and sounding) record that has clearly been played little reitterated by outstanding clean, nigh-on perfect sound. For those wanting this classic to be heard at it’s very best, you need not look any further and this on one of the world’s most revealing turntables.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality: This record even exceeds it’s very impressive looks and plays with lovely clean sound. I have often found this album disappointing for clean sound, but not this one. Finding one so lightly played and appearing little handled is always great news. This plays very quietly and has no pops or clicks, this being a first pressing made by Polydor for Island. A company that used a variety of companies to make their records, and some were certainly better than others. Thompson’s guitar chords are defined and sharp, even Swarbrick’s fiddle, always one of the most vulnerable to damage on vintage vinyl, is precise, focused and distortion free. This without any doubt has never been subjected to piledriver vintage stylus and this is immediately evident. A treat is in store for the winning bidder, cherish this wonderful recording at it’s very best. Early Fairports were very special and always nice to offer a very fine, first issue pink example. This is a delicate pink album that merits my highest recommendation and one most collectors will cherish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
