Label/Format: Blue Horizon - with matt surfaces that have gently textured finish.

Label Conditions: Both in super conditions: very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only a tiny few very fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Finding this popular blues album in mono with such mininimal evidence of usage is very difficult.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good average weight for this early-pressed Blue Horizon record.

Rarity: Scarce: and never easy to find the record this clean and offering magnificent sound. The cover has a little wear, but the record and sound will prove hard to find better.

Brief Info: The second album by ‘Peter Green’s’ Fleetwood Mac – an era when the band played real blues on arguably the most famous label of the genre. Pure class and a very early mono copy that does it nigh-on maximum justice. I had never found this an easy one to find in suitable conditions to offer, finding what appears to be a very lightly played mono is difficult. Most seen in less than carefully played condition and often many times on very basic, heavy-tracing crude record players with the beautiful sound ruined. It was justifiably popular and the majority who bought them played them considerably. This very solidly-pressed copy is in stunning super-clean condition for looks and sound. The cover does give more clues to it’s age but still very respectable one. For sound, this record is quite possibly the cleanest mono example I have hear in the last decade.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): and arguably better. A gatefold format with the front and back laminated. The inside is matt and smooth, it has four external flipbacks on the top and bottom edges. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day. Also includes the original polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: My grading may be a little harsh: the main issue is some laminate creasing on the front near the bottom right corner with a little on the back also. But still retaining a fine shine, decent freshness and clarity with no lifting or peeling. Some fairly light dulling seen when angled viewed that few will escape over this amount of time. Small corner tip rubs and small rubs to the front right edge, but overall, little detracts from the fine colourful picture of the young Mick Fleetwood.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Not a great deal to fault inside - minor handling traces, odd fine white to the flipback end here-and-there with one or two small edge burrs. The flipbacks undamaged and neat. The original owner put a fine pen line against two songs in the listings on the left face which bought to my attention the the fact that song 2 on side one and song 5 on side two have been listed wrongly. This is something I had never noticed before. The pen line very fine and dark and hardly even shows.

Top Edges: Both straight with the laminate complete and ultra smooth to the fingertip with no chips or scuffs.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with just a couple of tiny surface chips.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean, sharp with minimal thickening or burring, even viewed more critically end-on. The record enters on the back edge and both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, mainly straight with minimal compression and folded square. So all edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The laminate has shed, but the surface has little wear up to the ends that have rubbed (as most do). A small few, mainly small bar one chips, a couple of which have clipped letters of the text. But most intact and still easy to read.

Corners: Fairly light to moderate tip rubbing with quite fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very respectable all-round example of this classic late 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. A little wear and mild ageing, so not for the perfectionist, but many will be happy to have this one.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a heavy-duty plain white polylined inner that has the UK Patent Application text. Two pristine and crisp window circles and very clear lining. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. A couple of small stains on back but this has aged little overall.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed on high quality vinyl. The odd gentle surface mark or paper scuff that have no sound at all. Also a mark on the run-in groove on side one, but absolutely NO sound on the music whatsoever. In fact this record plays superbly and practically as made, and I know that is a bold statement for any popular mono record, especially when played on very clinical and revealing stereo equipment. We all know the perils these old blues classics potentially faced. This has some quiet songs and so often they are ruined by heavy usage that inflicts noise and groove wear which this copy has totally avoided. Any other surface marks very few, fine and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually an impressive record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage blues classic plays even above it’s clean visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A very fine CBS pressing for Blue Horizon, this specialist blues label seldom fails to please. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and nothing spoilt my play-grade experience. Few available copies will match or outperform this very early mono example I feel sure, this is an exceptional example for clean, focused sound. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended to all fans of real Fleetwood Mac blues.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
