Las Mothers - Just Another Band From L.A.

'Just Another Band From L.A. was recorded live at the Pauley Pavillion, UCLA (Los Angeles), on August 7, 1971. Released in early 1972, it is the last album to document the Mothers of Invention lineup that included singers Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan and (aka Flo & Eddie). (The other bandmembers on this particular recording are: Ian Underwood, Aynsley Dunbar, Don Preston, and Jim Pons.) A previous LP, Fillmore East, June 1971, focused on material related to life on the road that had to be dropped from the movie and album 200 Motels. This second live record presents different material, plus two old favorites completely rearranged for this version of the band: "Call Any Vegetable" and "Dog Breath." Side one of the LP was entirely comprised of "Billy the Mountain," a continuous 25-minute story-song. The piece, filled with bizarre stage antics and simple rock riffs, foretells "The Adventures of Greggary Peccary" and follows a logic similar to the "Sofa" suite. But the inclusion in its plot of dozens of very space-and-time-specific references (to towns, TV personalities, government officials, and businesses) made it age very quickly. Fans of the Flo & Eddie period will love the improvised storyline developments. If you're not keen on challenging and confrontational music you should approach with caution, even though this one has much better sound quality than Fillmore East, June 1971...'

This approx. 45 year old LP I have graded as being in Excellent condition. Both sides play through with no jumping, skipping or any other audio horrors. 

A perfectly acceptable vinyl-to-mp3 transfer, with a suitable turntable. Keep it real but in a digital way! 

The gatefold sleeve I have graded being in Good++ condition with light scuffing to the edges, minor bumps to the corners, light shelfwear to front and rear, as per age and vintage.

There is a 1.5" tear, bottom corner, front.

It has all the requisite Zappa in-jokes, small notations regarding clues in the artwork, an explanation of the scene pictured in the inner gatefold and a heart-warming band portrait on the rear...

The labels are in good condition, with no major defects, see close-up pictures uploaded.

'Studio Tan is one of four albums culled from the ill-fated 1976 box set Läther and released by Warner Bros. without Frank Zappa having a word to say about the final product (including the relentlessly dreadful and entirely inappropriate artwork). The 21-minute opener, "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary," is the culmination of Zappa's art of storytelling. A complex piece painstakingly assembled in the studio over three years, it allies the comedy rock of the Flo & Eddie era with the jazzy feel of The Grand Wazoo and the twisted prog rock of the 1973-1974 band. Yet, it is greater than the sum of its parts, proposing an unmatched musical narrative that amounts to a stunning synthesis of Zappa's influences, stylistic range, and studio techniques. Side two features an intentionally stupid pop song, "Let Me Take You to the Beach," showing that Zappa could turn his hand to just about anything, should he so wish, and two instrumental pieces written a few years earlier. The personnel is for the most part the same as on Roxy & Elsewhere. If you like challenging music allied to silly stories, it is worth your money for "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary" alone...'

This approx. 41 year old LP I have graded as being in VG condition. Both sides play through with no jumping, skipping or any other audio horrors, but it sits fairly in the VG grading, below, with light surface noise, visible, but not deep, scratches and other light surface marks...

It's still a perfectly acceptable vinyl-to-mp3 transfer, with a suitable turntable. Keep it real but in a digital way! 

The sleeve I have graded being in Good++ condition with light scuffing to the edges, minor bumps to the corners, light shelfwear to front and rear, as per age and vintage.

There is no grading possible for the abomination of the artwork choice by the record company...shame on all concerned...

GRADING GUIDE. (Goldmine Standard)

* Gradings range between - for example - VG, VG+ and VG++. In some cases, for example again, VG- may be used.

MINT (M) Absolutely perfect in every way. Often rumored but rarely seen, and if it is not just out of the pressing plant it is unlikely that, personally, I would ever use this grading.

NEAR MINT (NM OR M-) A good description of a NM record is ?it looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time.? In other words, it?s nearly perfect. NM records are shiny, with no visible defects. Writing, stickers or other markings cannot appear on the label, nor can any ?spindle marks? from someone trying to blindly put the record on the turntable. Major factory defects will be absent. If played, it will do so with no surface noise. NM covers are free of creases, ring wear and seam splits of any kind.

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+) or EXCELLENT (E) A good description of a VG+ record is ?except for a couple minor things, this would be Near Mint.? VG+ records may show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. Minor signs of handling are OK, too, such as telltale marks around the center hole, but repeated playing has not misshapen the hole. There may be some very light ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable.VG+ covers should have only minor wear. A VG+ cover might have some very minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom, the most vulnerable location. Also, a VG+ cover may have some defacing, such as a cut-out marking. VG++ is a step up from VG+ generally.

VERY GOOD (VG) Many of the imperfections found on a VG+ record are more obvious on a VG record. VG records lack most of the original gloss found on factory-fresh records. Groove wear is evident on sight, as are light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. When played, a VG record has surface noise, and some scratches may be audible. Minor writing, tape or a sticker can detract from the label. They remain a fine listening experience, just not the same as if it were in better shape.VG covers will have many signs of human handling. Ring wear in the middle or along the edges of the cover where the edge of a record would reside, is obvious, though not overwhelming. Some more creases might be visible. Seam splitting will be more obvious; it may appear on all three sides, though it won?t be obvious upon looking. A small pen or ink mark, or an original price sticker may be noticeable.

GOOD (G), GOOD PLUS (G+) or VERY GOOD MINUS (VG?) Good does not mean bad! The record still plays through without skipping, so it can serve as filler until something better comes along. But it has significant surface noise and groove wear, and the label is worn, with significant ring wear, heavy writing, or obvious surface damage to the label. A Good to VG? cover has ring wear, has seam splits obvious on sight and may have even heavier writing.

POOR (P) and FAIR (F) Records that have obvious damage, they are cracked, impossibly warped, or skip and/or repeat when an attempt is made to play them.

However, if you want it delivered Priority or 1st Class, ask beforehand, it's not a problem and I can make the necessary adjustments.
