Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Without any doubt, this record has hardly been played reitterated by superb playing surfaces and pristine sound.

Cat Number: K 44203.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A very impressive 150 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, but this is getting quite a tough one to find now, this early pressed record is in supreme condition and unusual to find this heavy pressed.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Still wheelchair-bound, Zappa took his musicians into Paramount Studios. On the 17-minute ‘Big Swifty’, overdubbing allowed Zappa to turn a sextet into a virtual big band. Aynsley Dunbar’s drumming supplied perfect fluency, aided by Alex Dmochowski, his English bassist (playing under the name ‘Erroneous’). The closing theme was a Zappa guitar solo transcribed by trumpeter Sal Marquez and arranged for brass. Electric instrumental soloing over a rock beat invited comparisons to Miles Davis and John McLaughlin, but there is an ironical twist to the tunes that makes the music undeniably Zappaesque. George Duke’s splendid keyboards and Sal Marquez’s muted-trumpet also have a humorous quality. Whereas contemporary jazz rock was reaching out to the cosmos, Zappa kept everything low-key and amusing. “Your Mouth’ is a tale of psychotic male jealously (‘you might loose a bunch of teeth...my shot gun...just might want to blow you away’), but sung in a deceptively light style (and with a killer country slide-guitar solo by Tony Duran). ‘It Just might be a One-shot Deal’ describes someone hallucinating and advises them to dig it ‘while it’s happening’: according to Zappa’s Zen-tinged materialism, life is no rehersal. Jeff Simmons, who had recorded a brilliant album of psychedelic balladry for Zappa’s Straight label - Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up, and and played Hawaiian guitar. ‘Waka/Jawaka’ has an underlying cowboy rhythm. Don Preston delivers a lovely solo on mini-moog that develops a crazy, surreal relationship to the underlying theme. Again, Zappa’s decisive mix locks the notes in, so that even though Preston was improvising, everything has a real tightness. As the theme fades out accompanied by orchestral chimes, Ravel’s Bolero comes to mind. Although a commercial non-starter, Waka is a great favourite among jazz and jazz-rock fans who are open-minded enough to give Zappa a listen. This really heavy pressing is in simply fantastic condition with the record appearing virtually as new - and that’s a promise, the cover close as well with just a rub on the bottom right edge. This wonderful record will please most-all Zappa fans.

Cover Condition and Details: EX++, a single unlaminated format. Printed and made by MacNeill Press Ltd London.

Cover Front: Odd minor surface blemish or ultra fine crease. Unsually clean and unrubbed, this does not wear well but this looks lovely. The very heavy record inside for around 38 years would normally mean ringwear of which this has barely a trace.

Cover Back: Absolutely superb and even better than the front, again no ringwear which is little short of remarkable.

Top Edge: Barely any wear.

Bottom Edge: There is some moderate rubbing near the right corner area, that apart, little else.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with hardly any wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: The faintest trace of a tiny rub on the top fold, almost nit-picking small. Solid, very straight, uncompressed, all text is perfect and totally unworn and as clear as when made.

Corners: Light tip rubs, more on bottom right as explained above. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very attractive all round example of this fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. So many of these are in poor or disappointing conditions, but this is not one of them. This strong item should please most collectors. The original unlined inner is also included in very fine condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and a really exceptional example. Pressed on very heavy, thick vinyl, very shiny and shows nothing more than ultra fine and faint surface traces under light. Merely removal blemishes few escape from unlined inners, I can hardly imagine finding this wonderful album better. This has hardly been played and will delight most fans of this great musician.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This record plays up to its stunning good looks too with nothing to fault, its almost CD quiet but with the original sound. Its always been one of Frank’s most underrated albums which is a shame, it has musicianship of the highest quality and Dunbar’s drumming was never better than on this fine album. The sound is very clean and totally distortion-free and there is no sound degrading at all. This copy has barely been ‘run-in’, its just so clean and fresh. The rasping brass is pin sharp which is vital for real enjoyment of this album - this is real expanded jazz rock, not too dissimilar to Hot Rats and The Mothers art-rock masterpiece The Grand Wazoo. It remains melodic and even catchy, the two main long tracks are simply superb. A copy for the FZ connoisseur and of course its as essential as around 60 other albums this master craftsman made. My highest possible recommendation for this gorgeous record.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
