Form (and Substance) Joy Division – Ultimate Joy Division Tome! Rare Limited Softback
Probably the rarest Joy Division book, and certainly something I’ve never seen on ebay before, this is Form (and Substance) – Clinton Heylin and Craig Wood’s long out of print and essential guide to Joy Division. A 2nd Print softback edition from 1988 – one of a run of 1500 in excellent condition throughout bar two 1cm white marks on back cover which may well be removable.
It’s an incredibly difficult to find item - due in part to the short print run, but also because the cover uses a raised black Germanic typeface on black, making it tremendously difficult to identify without looking carefully. Aesthetically it’s a brave and fitting choice though, and this attention to detail is followed inside - which in brief comprises
- 23 page biography of the band
- 20 page full recording history which covers both official recordings plus an astounding run down of each and every gig the band played annotated to note unofficial recordings of same where applicable
- 13 page photo selection including pictures from Ian Curtis’ wedding to Deborah Woodruffe and Kevin Cummins band photos
- 2 page facsimile of Factory Records ‘History Lesson’ – a typed run down of factory releases up to September 1979.
- A facsimile of Ian Curtis’s death certificate.

As a bonus, I’m also including an original edition of issue 9 of the New Order fanzine Paradise from March 1993. 24 pages plus bound black cover in excellent condition – lots of content on the closure of the Hacienda and just released album Republic and a nice freebie for the winner.
