French DGG set LA GRANDE MUSIQUE 11 volumes 64 LPs cool
This is a 10-volume set of French-pressed Deutsche Grammophon LPs, with each set containing 6 LPs. There is also an 11th set that's somewhat different from the others, containing 4 LPs. Total count: 64 LPs. Most of the records are NM, some VG++ with minor flaws; the boxes are also VG++ to NM.

The catalog numbers are 2864089 through 2864098, and 2864260 for the final set. The series is intended as a pocket history of music, and each box covers a particular period in music history. There are no notes in any of these boxes, just the LPs themselves.

The 10 volumes have the following titles and general contents:

#1 - L'Aube de la Grande Musique. Palestrina, Couperin, Gabrielli, Monteverdi, Handel, etc. Performers include the Monteverdi Choir, English Chamber Orchestra, Capella Academica de Vienne, Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Karl Richter, Charles Mackerras, many others.

#2 - L'Age d'Or du Baroque. Bach, Couperin, Vivaldi, Telemann. Performers include I Musici, Felix Ayo, Agnes Giebel, Eduard Melkus, Hertha Topper, Huguette Dreyfuss, etc.

#3 - Splendeur du Classicisme. Mostly Mozart, with some Haydn and various Bach sons. Karl Bohm, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Edith Mathis, Daniel Barenboim, Wolfgang Schneiderhan, etc.

#4 - Heroisme et Desespoir. Beethoven and Schubert. Amadeus Quartet, Pinchas Zukerman, Herbert von Karajan, Wilhelm Kempff, Emil Gilels, Christa Ludwig, etc.

#5 - L'Apogee du Romantisme. Schumann, Mendelssohn, Paganini, Berlioz, Saint-Saens, Grieg, Liszt, Weber. With Nathan Milstein, Rafael Kubelik, Mstislav Rostropovich, Salvatore Accardo, etc.

#6 - Le Piano Souverain. Liszt, Chopin, Schumann, Mendelssohn. Pianists: Gyorgy Cziffra, Martha Argerich, Branka Musulin, Geza Anda, Wilhelm Kempff, Maurizio Pollini, Lazar Berman, Roberto Szidon.

#7 - Le Triomphe du Grand Opera. Verdi, Rossini, Bellini, Mascagni, Wagner, etc. With Montserrat Caballe, Renata Scotto, Teresa Berganza, Rita Streich, Hermann Prey, Birgit Nilsson, many others.

#8 - Les Derniers Dieux Romantiques. R. Strauss, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Brahms. With Karajan, Milstein, Berman, Tamas Vasary.

#9 - L'Essor des Musiques Europeennes. Dvorak, Sibelius, Smetana, Rimsky-Korsakov, Puccini, Bizet, Mussorgsky. Performers include Lorin Maazel, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Michel Schwalbe.

#10 - Les Nouvelles Frontieres. Prokofiev, Bartok, Ravel, Debussy, Mahler, Stravinsky, Berg, Webern, Schoenberg, Bruckner. Performers include Karajan, Argerich, Seiji Ozawa, Claudio Abbado.

The last set is in a blue box rather than a green one, has 4 LPs, and is titled L'Universe de la Grande Musique - La Naissance de la Symphonie. Composers include Stamitz, Holzbauer, Vivaldi, Mouret, CPE Bach, Zelenka, and Boyce. Performers include I Musici, Trevor Pinnock, David Zinman, and Camerata Bern. This box includes a 48-page book of notes, in French only.

It's an impressive batch of records, but the absence of notes is pretty irritating. I presume when it was originally released it came with some kind of book, but the set I have doesn't include anything.

Condition Notes:
Records are generally graded on visual inspection.
M: Mint. I only use this grade when a record is sealed.
NM: Near Mint. As good as new. I won't grade any unsealed vinyl higher than this.
VG++: Excellent. Looks unflawed but not new; sound should be fine.
VG+: May have cosmetic flaws, mild surface noise or short patches of ticking, but should sound fine overall.
VG: May have moderate noise throughout or one or two bad patches from scratches. Still fine for general listening.
Good: Noisy throughout, but plays through.
