About the album: Future Classic is the sophomore album from LA-based Pop/R&B artist Willow Stephens. The record will be released January 9, 2024 on vinyl and all digital platforms through Head Bitch Music.
Willow Stephens is an award-winning songwriter whose catalog has accumulated millions of streams. Future Classic offers a fresh and unique blend of groovy introspective pop, R&B, and a whole lot of heart. Songs from the album have already garnered attention from Spotify’s Fresh Finds R&B and Nu-Disco playlists. The single “SHINE” appeared on Hulu’s "Everything's Trash". Stephens has shared stages with acts such as Allen Stone, Macklemore and Andy Mineo.
The release falls 4 years to the day after Stephens’ debut album release show at the Troubadour in January 2020. It would be the last show she played for nearly 2 years due to the COVID pandemic. Now, Future Classic marks her triumphant return. An album worthy of the comeback it represents, the project explores a range of themes including self-awareness, marriage, and mental health. With influences ranging from Emily King to Prince, Sade to Silk Sonic, Future Classic is full of feel-good bops that will instantly transform any space into a dance floor and poignant lyrics that cut straight to the heart.
Future Classic will be accompanied by a music video and infomercial (out Jan 23) where Willow stars as an over the top self-help guru, slinging her 7-step method to get you out of your funk and back in your groove. Future Classic is the title track, but it also describes the sonic flavors and the way the project was recorded. Speaking on the process, Stephens shared, “I wanted to capture a timeless feel with the songwriting. We used all the digital, modern recording techniques at our disposal but we also recorded some elements very analog. Some tracks have real drums, horns and instruments recorded live to tape, others are quite electronic. We wanted to release on vinyl as well as digital to embody the concept of Future Classic.”
Collaborating closely with producer and co-writer Jacob McCaslin, (Stevie Wonder, Sasha Sloan) the two crafted a powerhouse of an album featuring 12 tracks, 9 of which were produced by McCaslin. Producers Swatkins (Allen Stone, Scary Pockets) and Ryan Short also contributed to key tracks. Future Classic is the perfect soundtrack to start your new year; it’s music that will get out of your funk and back in your groove in no time.
