GREAT SOCIETY Pre-Jefferson Airplane GARAGE Psych DJ 45
MINT DJ FM. COLLECTION OF AIRPLANE AUTHOR RALPH GLEASON Here is an unbeatably rare and highly desirable copy of the highly collectible single by the Great Society, SOMEBODY TO LOVE/FREE ADVICE, on Northbeach Records. This of course is the first record ever featuring Grace Slick, prior to her joining the Jefferson Airplane, singing what was to become perhaps their greatest hit, written by her then brother-in-law, Great Society member Darby Slick.
This is a very rare promo copy (generally pressed before the commercial copies) and looks unplayed, in spectacular mint/near mint condition.
And perhaps most interesting, this copy belonged to Ralph J. Gleason, the legendary San Francisco Chronicle music critic and co-founder of Rolling Stone Magazine. Gleason was a huge supporter of the Airplane, writing the liner notes for their debut album, and literally writing the book on the band--in this case, "The Jefferson Airplane and the San Francisco Scene"--the first ever book on the San Francisco music explosion.
As you can see, Gleason has written his initials RJG on the B-Side in blue felt tip. Ordinarily, writing on a label is seen as a detraction, but here it's almost an autograph from arguably the Airplane/San Francisco Scene's earliest and most vocal booster.
Oh, and we almost forgot to mention that this is a fantastic garage psychedelic record. Superb. See our other listings this week for other collectibles from the Gleason collection.
