Description

This is not the 1971 remix it is the scarce 1970 second pressing of the 1969 release. It is the third studio album by the Greatful Dead recorded September 1968 to March 1969 and released June 20,1969. During the recording of this album Ampex came out with the first Multitrack recording device with 16 tracks. This doubled the number of tracks the band had on its previous album. It ment the band spent a lot of time getting use to the new technology and in the end Garcia felt the band had put too much on everything. In 1971 Garcia and Phil Lesh went back into studio and remixed the album taking out whole sections of songs. This removed much of the original experimental character of the 1969 release. They went back to the 1969 release with the special box set release of 2010.

In Greatful Dead history this album has some first. It is the first with Tom Constanten as a band member, the first album recorded in or near their hometown of San Francisco, first time Robert Hunter is full time contributing member making the Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter writing partnership that lasted till the end. The band also for the first time put more importance to acoustic songs. The album cover is pretty special also. It was listed in 1991 by Rolling Stone as the eighth best album cover of all time. It is said that it is five year old Courtney Love in the back cover photo. They say the words Greatful Dead on front cover also read "We Ate The Acid". There are other things to find in the artwork as well. The title is pronounced OX-OH-MOX-OH-AH.

The band is Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Tom Constanten, and Ron McKernan.

Again this is a scarce album and I spent some time figuring out the mystery of why this didn't fit either the 1969 or the 1971 release. The vinyl is near mint. The cover is near mint with some flaking on the spine.
