Description
This auction is for FIVE (5) GUIDED BY VOICES-RELATED SOLO ARTIST 7" SINGLES AND EXTENDED PLAY (EP) VINYL RECORDS ! The slabs include four Tobin Sprout pieces and one Mitch Mitchell 7".
I was recently digging through my endless closet, and came across this deep-dish 7" box that contained eleven Guided By Voices 7"ers as well as these Tobin Sprout / Mitch Mitchell pieces.
Here's a little back story. I had a college radio show at my local alma mater from 1978 to 1991. I was still living locally, and they allowed me to stay on after graduation.
Now normally, I would say that these were played on my radio show, but that was not the case here. Also, I had a roommate that had a damn good stereo, but we parted ways in 1988.
Since all of these discs were released after 1994 or so, I think I can honestly say that they are all previously unplayed! In fact, most were still packed in the original box from the store I ordered these from (Good as Any...Better 'n Some in Franklin, Pennsylvania). The first time they were played was when they were listened to for this ebay ad.
I have a turntable now (such that it is...it "wows" like crazy, but it does the job for what I need it for), but definitely not back then.
There are five platters in this auction, and I have future ads for ELEVEN GBV discs. I thought I could listen to all of them in a few hours, write the ads up, and have everything ready to list in time for this weekend. But it was not to be. This is taking way longer than I thought! My advise would be to check back during the month of March for additional GBV listings. I usually put ads up Sunday evening. Thanks.
Each 7" is in EXCELLENT condition (at least). As they were only played once, whatever you hear or see is the way they were upon purchase back thirty years ago! So if you hear a few light tics (there are no skips) or some low noise at the end of a song, just know that that is the way it was pressed long ago (on not the greatest quality vinyl either).
Disc information was cross referenced with the Guided By Voices Data Base (GBVDB). Sometimes the year of issue didn't match, and I'll point that out when a case arises.
For each piece of wax, I will show the front and back covers, both sides of the disc, and any inserts that are included. If it is pressed on colored vinyl, that will be shown, as well as the rare defect (if any). Here's the details;
1. BEVIL WEB / 3 DREAM BAG SPLIT 7" -- This can be seen in pictures #2 - #6. Bevil Web IS Tobin Sprout, usually just him and a 4-track machine. He splits the vinyl with the band 3 Dream Bag, and each have three songs on their respective sides.
Catalogue number is SS-009, released on the Simple Solution Records label. GBVDB says this was released in 1994, but the included insert says that the 3 Dream Bag songs were written and copyrighted in 1995.
There are some very low tics on both sides, probably because this was pressed on cheap vinyl. If you lay the record down flat, it looks black. But if you take a gander at photo #6, you will note that you can see right though it.
2. BEVIL WEB -- MINUTE MAN / LARIAT MAN -- Pressed on the Wabana / Spirit OF ORR Record label in 1996, with the catalogue number of ORE 5. This contains a one-sided insert. See photographs #7 - #10.
As with the other Bevil Web disc, you can see through this piece of vinyl also...barely. It's very dense, and almost black, but you can see through it if you hold it up to a lamp. Sorry, no pic of light passing through this one, as I ran out of picture room...
3. TOBIN SPROUT -- THREE SONG EP / POPSTRAM -- I saw this referred to as the "Popstram" EP somewhere, so let's go with that. This was released on the Recordhead label in 1996, with the catalog number of LUNA 4. This can be viewed in pics #11 - #15, and again, you can see right through this piece of vinyl. Also contains a two sided insert.
The record sleeve is open on three sides (two sides and top). That's how a lot of indie seven-inchers are, where the paper is just folded neatly in half, and there's your instant sleeve (a lot of GBV 7"ers are like this).
When I put this EP on, I was like "Okay, this sounds pretty good...", and then "Sadder Than You" came on, and I almost started crying! I thought, holy crap, THIS IS THE BEST SONG THAT GBV NEVER RECORDED! Seriously, if everything in the world was right, this would have been a #1 pop hit! And you don't even need the verse lyrics...just the chorus and backing track alone are enough. I went temporarily insane, and started looking up live versions, cover versions...whatever I could find. My recovery will be lengthy...
4. EYESINWEASEL -- SEVEN AND NINE / DAUGHTERS OF THE MOON -- See pictures #16 - #19. This one was released in 2000 on the Recordhead / Wigwam Records label. Catalogue number is LUNA 20. Tobin actually has a band backing him up this time.
There is just a light touch of wear on the front cover, to the right of the lady on the left edge, and on the back right shoulder of the lady on the right.
5. MITCH MITHELL'S TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE / ILLYAH KURYAHKIN SPLIT 7" -- Pictures #20 through #24 show this final piece. This was pressed on red vinyl in 1996 on the Arena Rock Recording Company record label. Catalogue number is ar004.
Two inserts are included; a double sided lyric sheet, and a small catalogue sheet listing other vinyl releases and product. The sleeve is another one of those three open-sided folded sheets.
That's it. Again, these were never played until now, so what you hear is what you would have heard back in the '90s. These will be shipped in a box. I don't do envelopes.
If you have any questions about these items, please feel free to message me. Also check out my other auctions going on NOW of various other items of interest (including some other GBV releases). Thanks again for looking...during these most very...very...very...troubled times...
