Brief Info: Hard Stuff were a powerhouse heavy-rock trio that included John Du Cann and Paul Hammond, formerly of Atomic Rooster. John Gustafson, formerly of Quatermass made up the three on this their second, and final album. They toured with a few bigger name heavy rock and progressive acts of the time, but a serious car accident bought their progress to a halt and they folded thereafter. Their sound is guitar-driven rock and clearly it attracted attention to be issued on Deep Purple’s label, but sales were low and this has never been an easy one to find. This a lovely example and my first ever available copy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): possibly even undergraded at that. An unlaminated gatefold format with the outside faces being quite heavily textured. The inside is smooth finished. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the scarce and fragile deep purple unlined inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: Very little to fault on this super-impressive front and back, that are clearly prone to all forms of wear. The texturing is pronounced, so the lack of speckle (ink removal of the raised areas), is unusual and most welcome. The surfaces are clean, fresh and practically devoid of any creasing with any marks bordering on minuscule. No fading or ageing of any note, the lack of ring wear a huge bonus, the back has only the merest hint trace of any rim impression. This colourful and dramatic cover will never prove easy to find better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The odd light hinge end crease apart, this centrefold has barely anything to fault.

Top Edges: Both straight with any rubbing very fine and light.

Bottom Edges: Again, both straight with barely any wear at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and small as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both are guaranteed untrimmed.

=Spine and Text: Solid, straight and quite thick with minimal compression. Folded a little off-square, so the edges meet up quite closely together but not quite parallel. All text is nigh-on perfect and unworn and main surface has very little wear at all, most of any present at the ends. Even the vulnerable folds retain practically all ink as well.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing, so hard to avoid totally on such a cover. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a superb example of this scarce unlined deep purple inner sleeve. One that has survived barely creased and ALL edges unsplit with NO repairs. Lovely deep unfaded colour and minimal traces of rim impression with no ringwear or ink-loss. The slightest of slight hint of usage on the very top entrance edge, this being ultra critical

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): or better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with few plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very fine, light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce and elusive record plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely any to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
