A wonderful opportunity to own a rare and very limited (2,500 only!) first time, vinyl-only release of the soundtrack

to Hal Ashby's 1971 cult comedy! Written by Cat Stevens, the album contains two songs composed specifically for the

film, plus previously unreleased alternative versions of others and a bonus 7" single! This fantastic gatefold package also contains

a 36-page full-colour booklet filled with never-before-seen photographs and an oral history of the making of the film and the music!

Harold Chasen (Bud Cort) is a young man obsessed with death. He regularly stages elaborate fake suicides, attends funerals, and drives a hearse,

all to the chagrin of his mother, socialte Mrs. Chasen. At a funeral service for a total stranger, Harold meets Maude (Ruth Gordon), a 79 year-old woman

who shares Harold's hobby of attending funerals. He is entranced by her quirky outlook on life, which is bright and excessively carefree, in contrast with his

own morbidity. The pair form a bond, and Maude slowly shows Harold the pleasures of art and music, teaching him how to play the banjo and how to make

the most of his time on earth. Meanwhile, Harold's mother determines, much against his wishes, to find him a wife to settle down with. One by one, Harold

frightens and horrifies each of his appointed dates by appearing to commit gruesome acts such as self-immolation, self-mutilation and seppuku.

As they become closer, Harold announces that he will marry Maude, resulting in disgusted outbursts from his family, psychiatrist and priest. Maude's 80th

birthday arrives and Harold throws a surprise party for her. As the couple dance, Maude tells Harold that she 'couldn't imagine a lovelier farewell'. He

 immediately questions Maude as to her meaning and she reveals that she has purposely taken an overdose of sleeping pills and will be dead by midnight.

She restates her firm belief that 80 is the proper age to die.

Harold rushes Maude to the hospital, where she is treated unsuccessfully and dies. In the final sequence, Harold's car is seen going off a seaside cliff but,

after the crash, the final shot reveals Harold calmly on top of the cliff, holding his banjo. After gazing down at the wreckage, he dances away, picking out

Cat Stevens' 'If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out' on the banjo.

Sleeve: Great gatefold card sleeve with a stylised image of Harold and Maude in a meadow of flowers on the front, and a photo of the pair on a

motorcycle (with flowers for wheels!) on the back. There is an obi strip round the first leaf of the sleeve, with a photo of Cat Stevens and details of the release

 on it. On the front there are light bumps to the top and bottom-left and bottom-right corners, plus a small (65mm) ridge immediately to the right of the spine.

 On the rear, there are light bumps to the top and bottom-left and top-right corners. (I bought this album new and the seller decided to send it in a standard mailer!)

There is, what appears to be, some very light marking on the cover, but I'm not sure if this is part of the design or, perhaps, a reaction to the plastic it's loosely

 STILL SEALED in.

Please note that this weighty and fragile item will be securely padded and packaged in a carton to minimise

This is just one item from my own extensive and eclectic personal collection of music and related bits and pieces which I will be listing over the next few months, or so.
