This would make an amazing gift for your resident Jellyfish fan...
It blows my mind to realize this album was released over 30 years ago. One of the finest debut albums ever. The legendary power pop singer-song writer Emitt Rhodes was stunned when I played it for him. And it still stands the test of time even after repeated listenings.
So....
This is a super-rare PROMO LOT of the legendary Bellybutton album on Charisma Records and includes the vinyl LP, the CD and the cassette and all three feature the rare fold-out cover, (The commercially available pressings had a standard sleeve without the fold-out.).
Included is the INCREDIBLY hard-to-find Charisma Records PRESS KIT, that includes two PROMO PICTURES.
I searched for a vinyl copy in October of 1990 after I saw Jellyfish play live at a Cal State Fullerton "lunchtime concert" after reading a sterling review of the album in the Los Angeles Times Orange County edition. This was before I actually heard the record or even a song. I was unable to track down the vinyl, so I bought the CD...even though I didn't have a CD player at the time. They were kind of new and a bit expensive. I went straight from Tower Records to my buddy's house, as he DID have a CD player. I was hooked after hearing the first track.
It wasn't until the advent of eBay and well into the new century that I purchased a vinyl copy. And it was PRICEY, even then. By that time CDs were the standard and vinyl was just another old technology.
That said, the vinyl is at the very least, NEAR MINT. No visible flaws The record looks pristine. It sounds incredible.
The "fold out" cover has a few flaws and those are documented in the accompanying photos. (I have more detailed photos, upon request, as eBay limits me to 12).
Every promo pressing I have ever seen, in person or online, has a notch/cut on the spine about an inch and a half below the the top left corner. There is also a "When you PLAY IT, SAY IT!" sticker just left of the fold out portion. On the rear there is usually a gold stamp warning you that "unauthorized transfer" is prohibited. So...I guess this makes it contraband of some sort. I have seen copies that do not have the gold stamp, but they are SUPER RARE.
So, the aforementioned "flaws" are standardized. Almost every copy I have seen contain them.
The non-standard flaws on this specific cover are generally related to the corners. The photos show them. The biggest is the top left & right corners, which exhibit a little bit of "whiting". The bottom left and right look pretty good. The bottom right has just a little. No seam splits on the top, bottom or the spine.
The "fold out" has a little bit of "whiting" at the very top and bottom of the corners on the right side. That's pretty standard. I've included a photo of that.
The original inner sleeve with the lyrics is included. It has a bit wrinkling/creasing on the bottom. See the photo.
When I bought this, I was extremely happy with the visual condition. I think you will be, as well. Is it absolutely perfect? No. But it's close.
The "fold out" CD cover/booklet is in excellent condition, save for the promo hole. The inlay is in near mint condition except for, once again, the requisite promo hole in the barcode. The CD looks and plays perfectly.
The cassette is still FACTORY SEALED. The spine states "Lent for promotional use only".
The SUPER RARE press kit is in excellent condition but has a small indentation near the middle top. The top left corners of the promo photos are slightly bent.
Please see the photos for actual condition, as my description may not be sufficient.
I've tried to document as much as possible in the attached scans/photos. I have taken more specific photos of the aforementioned flaws, so if you need to see them, please feel free to contact me.
