Review

One of the most stunning debuts in rock history, and one of the definitive albums of the psychedelic era. On Are You Experienced?, Jimi Hendrix synthesized various elements of the cutting edge of 1967 rock into music that sounded both futuristic and rooted in the best traditions of rock, blues, pop, and soul. It was his mind-boggling guitar work, of course, that got most of the ink, building upon the experiments of British innovators like Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend to chart new sonic territories in feedback, distortion, and sheer volume. It wouldn't have meant much, however, without his excellent material, whether psychedelic frenzy ("Foxey Lady," "Manic Depression," "Purple Haze"), instrumental freak-out jams ("Third Stone From the Sun"), blues ("Red House," "Hey Joe"), or tender, poetic compositions ("The Wind Cries Mary") that demonstrated the breadth of his songwriting talents. Not to be underestimated were the contributions of drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding, who gave the music a rhythmic pulse that fused parts of rock and improvised jazz. Many of these songs are among Hendrix's very finest; it may be true that he would continue to develop at a rapid pace throughout the rest of his brief career, but he would never surpass his first LP in terms of consistently high quality.   (courtesy Allmusic)

CONDITION OF THE RECORD:

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, we grade ALL records under a strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight).

    • WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR-MINT. The original luster is very much in tact, and the vinyl is beautiful with just a minimum of 'surface graying' and a minimum number of very light, insignificant, superficial hair-like surface marks seen UNDER A LIGHT (though they DO NOT affect the listening experience; only the beautiful quality of the music comes through.
    • The record is pressed on beautiful, semi-flexible vinyl. This vinyl was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such vinyl pressings is full-bodied, bright and rich in quality.
    • Quality speaking, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior digital recording!!
    • Included is a 'HI-GRADE' MFSL PVC INNER SLEEVE (FOR PROTECTION)

CONDITION OF THE COVER (HIGH GLOSS):

THE COVER IS GOOD; GRADED GOOD to VG- (VERY GOOD MINUS)

The following flaws or imperfections are found on the cover:

  • Cover has beginning ring impression (not significant); on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring impression as a 1 (front) and 1 (back).
  • Cover shows VERY LITTLE corner wear (on two corner tips only). On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of corner wear as a 1.
  • Cover shows some wear. CAUTION>due to a minimum number of small (little) creases/wrinkles off spine and seams, little tear in LP insert (3/4th inch - not significant), grade of cover is good to vg-.
