After leaving The Velvet Underground, John Cale chose to go the user-friendly route. His first solo album is surprisingly, moderate, mature, intelligent pop. Where his work with the Velvets was rough, even difficult to hear and decipher, this LP is smoothly finished. Cale sounds witty and pensive at times and is even lushly orchestrated on selections like Big White Cloud.
