Maurice Jarre - THE PROFESSIONALS - Colgems COSO-5001 - TAS - BEST!!
Bear with me, please, as there's a story in this:
I look at thousands of records a week, every week, year in, year out. And not once had I ever come across a copy of THE PROFESSIONALS. Jarre's film score is, yep, heralded on the TAS list as one of the very best, but, fact is, of all the TAS picks it is one of only five records I hadn't even seen, let alone heard. Considering that I've attended more audio conferences and club meetings over the last thirty years than I care to mention, this baby must be p-r-e-t-t-y rare.
So I was overjoyed to find one last year and impatient to audition it. Got myself ready, over an audiophile friend's house, with electrostatic headphones on, to check areas of concern on the disc before we opened it up on the loudspeakers.
Well, that's where this story gets interesting:
You see, I usually do this checking rather deftly and quickly, to grade playability on very important discs. But I soon forgot about auditioning playability and got completely carried away. I mean, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind why this record is on TAS. It's incredibly BIG! I mean sweepingly, movie-score "big," with a rock-solid image and man, oh man, percussion that will lift the wooden floor in your listening room and slap you in the chest with it. So incredible was it, in fact, when I took the headphones down from my ears, finally, my friend unexpectedly said, "That good, huh?"
I looked rather dumbfounded, I imagine, for he finished with, "You were laughing quite a bit."
Yes, I had been laughing in disbelief while listening, as any audiophile worth his tweeters would, and didn't even know it.
That said, this second copy I've found has a jacket with a bit of staining on the bottom, both front and back, and slight beginnings of edge in places, though not seriously. Inside, the record is in very decent shape and plays out like this: Side 1 has very shallow line work that will probably deliver VG+ to VG. Side 2 has just paper scuffs, and should play VG+.
A very rare record and one that, I bet, gets you laughing outloud, too, the sound is that good.
