After making an auspicious debut here in the UK with his first album, Dear, singer?songwriter Keaton Henson now bows with his US (and ANTI?) debut, Birthdays. Already an acclaimed visual artist, Keaton surprised UK audiences with a spare, densely emotional album chronicling the collapse of a relationship, winning an intense fanbase, lavish press coverage, and BBC airplay, including the influential Zane Lowe show.
Now, working with producer Joe Chiccarelli (My Morning Jacket, Shins), Henson has kept the sparseness of his debut, expanding on a few tracks into lush full band arrangements that still manage to feel organic and at peace with his earlier work. First track “Sweetheart, What Have You Done To Us,” has racked up 250,000 youtube views in less than a month, already surpassing the most popular tracks from his debut; videos which were early on praised as fully realized works of art.
Keaton Henson is a unique artist with no obvious modern peers, harkening instead to the spirit of elders such as Nick Drake, Tim Buckley, Chris Bell and Elliot Smith, an artist whose work The Sunday Times calls, "Both beautiful and unbearable...one of the most compelling singer?songwriters we’ve heard in ages."
