·       THE LEAVES - HEY JOE – MONSTROUSLY RARE TRUE FIRST, ORIGINAL PRESSING ON SURREY LABEL - ORIGINAL 1965 SURREY RECORDS MONO LP-3005;

·       ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

·       ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING ON SURREY LABEL (PRESSINGS ON MIRA LABEL ALSO EXIST, BUT THEY ARE LATER (SECOND) PRESSINGS!!!)

·       A NOTE ABOUT THIS PRESSING: THE LEAVES INITIALLY SIGNED UP WITH SURREY, A SMALL INDIE LABEL. THE GROUP’S FIRST ALBUM WAS ACTUALLY ALREADY PRESSED ON SURREY LABEL (AND WITH SURREY LABELS AFFIXED TO THE WAX) WHEN SURREY WAS SUDDENLY ACQUIRED BY AND ABSORBED INTO MIRA RECORDS, A SLIGHTLY LARGER RECORD LABEL. BECAUSE, AT THIS POINT, THE COVERS FOR THE ALBUM HAD NOT BEEN PRINTED YET, MIRA RECORDS FINISHED THE JOB, PRINTED THE COVERS WITH THEIR LOGO AND PACKAGED THOSE VERY FEW ALREADY PRESSED SURREY RECORDS IN MIRA COVERS; IN OTHER WORDS, NO SURREY COVERS EXIST; ALL TRUE FIRST PRESSINGS (SUCH AS THE ONE WE HAVE HERE) HAVE SURREY RECORDS PACKAGED IN MIRA COVERS. SO RARE ARE THE ORIGINAL SURREY MONO PRESSINGS THAT THEY EVEN PRECEDE WHITE LABEL PROMO PRESSINGS MADE BY MIRA RECORDS (NO SURREY WHITE LABEL PROMO HAS EVER SURFACED!).

·       IT SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED THAT NO STEREO PRESSINGS EXIST ON SURREY LABEL, ONLY MONOS. IN OTHER WORDS, TRUE FIRST MONO PRESSING IS ON SURREY LABEL; WHEREAS FIRST STEREO PRESSING IS ON MIRA LABEL. THEY WERE SET APART BY ABOUT A YEAR (MONO RELEASED IN 1965, STEREO IN 1966)

·       ORIGINAL BURGUNDY (DEEP PURPLE) SURREY LABEL WITH SILVER PRINT.

·       THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·       ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)

·       CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

·       THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

(Note: this is a REAL image of the ACTUAL item you are bidding on. This is NOT a "recycled" image from our previous auction. What you see is what you'll get. GUARANTEED!)

This is one hell of a debut album, especially for a group that only lasted for about a year after its release. The Leaves perform some superb folk-rock in a Byrds/Beatles vein ("Just a Moment," "Girl From the East"), excellent lyrical garage punk ("Words," "Tobacco Road"), and solid hard rock ("Hey Joe," "Too Many People"), and cross swords with the Rolling Stones ("You Better Move On," "Back On the Avenue" -- the latter a ripoff of the Stones' "2120 South Michigan Avenue") and Bob Dylan ("Love Minus Zero"). The sound isn't exactly consistent, given the gamut of influences at work here, from Bo Diddley ("Dr. Stone") to primitive psychedelia ("War of Distortion"), but there isn't a bad song on the disc. Maybe the strangest and best track in that regard is their cover of "He Was a Friend of Mine," which incorporates elements of both the Searchers' "When You Walk In the Room" and the Byrds' "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" into its structure and beat -- the guitars are a real kick there. Anyone who enjoyed the first two Byrds albums must own this disc.

(REVIEW REPRINTED COURTESY OF BRUCE EDER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

This is the granddad of all garage-rock, and probably the only case in the entire history of Rock, where a particular album is so completely identified with the entire genre or subcategory. For all purposes and intents, this is the album that started the whole "Garage-Rock" hoopla. Not to mention the fact that the title track has been covered by The Byrds…Love…one Jimi Hendrix…Deep Purple, etc, etc, etc… And, of course, title track has been included in the original version of the Elektra's legendary 1972 "Nuggets" compilation.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Original Surrey pressing of this title is much rarer that a later, Mira version of this title. We estimate that Mira pressings of this album outnumber Surrey copies by a ratio of at least 20:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(e)           Stereo pressings of this title do not exist on Surrey label (only on Mira)

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some ring wear. On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4 (front side) and 6 (back side)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 2 and 4 inches / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the bottom seam and spine

-         Cover shows some yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity (nothing significant).

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover has a small name stamp on the back panel

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
