Her extraordinary clarion voice enabled her to distinguish herself as an interpreter of other people’s songs in an era that prized the singer/songwriter. After her breakthrough on Capitol Records with The Stone Poneys (Different Drum) plus some acclaimed solo releases, Linda Ronstadt jumped to David Geffen's bourgeoning Asylum roster, joining the Eagles and Jackson Browne to form the genesis of the "California Country-Rock" sound.

Don't Cry Now, her first for Asylum, was released in 1973 and would help solidify Ronstadt as one of the premiere female pop vocalists for the next two decades.

Various tracks were produced by John Boylan, J.D. Souther, and for the first time in what would be along and highly successful relationship, British musician (Peter & Gordon) Peter Asher. The album spent more than a year on the Billboard chart and peaked at No. 45. Featured hit singles are the Eagles' "Desperado", Bonnie Raitt's "Love Has No Pride", Randy Newman's sly observation on slavery and southern culture "Sail Away", plus a nod to both Dusty Springfield and the Grand Ole Opry with 'Silver Threads and Golden Needles".

Guest appearances include guitar work by both the Eagles' Glenn Frey and super-session man Larry Carlton, plush harmonica by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Jimmy Fadden, bass and drums by L.A. Did any musician have more talent at their beck and call during the '70s than Linda Ronstadt? Absolutely not. Part of her impeccable string of mid-1970s albums that defined California’s soft-rock scene, the Grammy-winning Hasten Down the Wind is Ronstadt at her best—and that’s saying something. Consider the watertight repertoire: The Warren Zevon title track. Patsy Cline’s (by way of Willie Nelson) "Crazy", Buddy Holly’s "That’ll Be the Day", Nelson’s "Down So Low", Karla Bonoff’s "If He’s Ever Near", and Ry Cooder’s "The Tattler".

Linda Ronstadt's appeal crossed so many genre lines it's impossible to categorize her as anything other than a gifted vocalist. She enjoyed success on country and rock charts alike with a voice that capably handled the requirements of both styles. There was a commanding roughness to her you-did-me-wrong classic, "You're No Good," that mixed both soul and R&B stylings into her vocals. In a similar vein, she handled the Motown standard, "Heat Wave," like a pro, this time giving it the slightest hint of a country twang. 

She even rose to the occasion of covering Buddy Holly's "That'll Be the Day." Rondstadt had some of her best moments with material that had a more emotional element, regardless of genre. "Love Is a Rose" and "Tracks of My Tears" are good examples of the disparate styles she could navigate with equal aplomb. Greatest Hits doesn't chronicle Rondstadt's hits past the mid-1970s, but is still worth owning, not only for the songs themselves, but as a point of reference in her career.
