Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin
Atlantic 1969
A rare opportunity to own a very nice copy of the iconic 1st pressing with turquoise sleeve and original uncorrected A//1 B//1 matrix codes and Superhype label credit.
It is widely known that the turquoise sleeve was withdrawn and replaced with the orange lettering very soon after release. This is from The Jimmy Page Anthology (Genesis Publications 2020) and throws some light on the reason behind the change from the man himself:
I wanted the back cover to look like a sepia photograph, and then have the Led Zeppelin lettering and Atlantic logo on the front cover in orange to be sympathetic with the sepia tone on the back. There was a small edition printed with the lettering and logo in turquoise, the colour the opposite of orange. This unrequested change lost the relationship between the sepia on the back cover and the lettering on the front cover, so it was duly withdrawn.
And so history was made and the Led Zeppelin collectors holy grail created!
The copy on sale here also has the first issue A//1 B//1 matrices WITHOUT the corrected ‘8’ as found on later copies.
The vinyl is a very solid VG+. Plays beautifully with only ever light background noise audible in quieter parts and between tracks. Original Superhype credit labels are clean with minimal spindle wear. Surfaces are bright with just the odd light mark - nothing feelable - and none of the visible marks have any impact on the audio. You may notice some areas on the surface that appear green in the photos. These are reflections from a pot plant!
The audio is for the most part clear and clean. VG+ throughout. Certainly nothing major to report - no skips or jumps. I noticed approximately 6 light ticks just over halfway through Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and a similar amount during I Can't Quit You Baby. These really are very light and not a result of any feelable marks. To my knowledge, the vinyl hasn't been professionally cleaned.
The sleeve is VG+ too. Very little of the usual laminate creasing. A bit of crushing at the bottom of the spine and some slight darkening on the spine from the original white plus a few small lateral spine creases common on this sleeve. A little laminate bubbling too but really, a very solid copy.
The inner is the original and also in VG+ condition.
This will be sent Special Delivery and extremely well packed with components separate.
