Description

50 YEARS YOUNG!!<<<
Fed up tying to snag a red & plum from Oct-1971? Prices are high and just when you think you've hit the jackpot - the copy arrives and it is crap. It's a minefield!
If you're particularly interested in audio integrity/quality - there is another way to get yourself top-of-the-line audio from a copy just a couple of months later. Why not try a Jan'72 copy... ?..With the exact same plum matrix audio cut on it? >>I.e. the audio is identical to a November '71 copy<<. Worth thinking about because you stand a much better chance of an epic rendition from a copy like this than shelling out a fortune for the earliest copy - only to be disappointed with a 50/50 rendition. The truth with these Jan 72 copies is the audio is identical - and what is even more surprising...some of the copies were pressed heavier than late red & plums. So, I would say a copy like this is REALLY worth thinking about. BANG 4 BUCK - this copy is off the scale<<<<
Ok, so how do we spot these copies? They all look the same right...? Well...yes and no. What you need to look for in the detail is the following..NO sign of the Warners logo in the perimeter text and the perimeter text ALL residing in the southern sector. You might also note the 'Misty Mountain Top' typo/error still exhibiting on these copies. BUT the REAL interesting indicator can be found in the deadwax. The very 1st copies on Green & Orange come with the original red&plum catalogue numbers BOTH sides [very briefly, before switching to a new catalogue sequence]. You need to look for '2401012 & A3/B4'. Identical to a Red & Plum Xmas-71 copy. This copy in particular is pressed nice and heavy. In fact, it seems heavier than some of the original red & plum stock. Which might sound weird - but is perfectly plausible.
The vinyl comes housed in an original gatefold cover and, IMPORTANTLY, a genuine 1st issue inner sleeve. These earliest Orange and Green copies can sometimes be found with the original design inner sleeve. We are talking textured inner sleeve. No catalogue numbers top right and flipbacks EXPOSED. SO, 100% genuine and 100% complete,
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) Well I promised you a cracker and this copy will De-liver! Has clearly only seen light use. Under close inspection I can make out a couple of superficial marks per side - nothing remotely troublesome. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback. Now, don't go underestimating a grading like that on a Zeppelin Jan72 copy...it's highly unusual. Basically, you stand a much better chance of a near perfect rendition from a near-master copy at...probably a THIRD of the price of a red & plum. Now, I've tested many copies from this Winter 71/72 period...and I would put this copy, easily, in the top two or three copies I've ever witnessed [that's for red & plum too]. What is so unusual is that those deep grooves have perfectly preserved the audio. And on this title that's highly significant because it contains THREE extremely fussy ZEP acoustic numbers. Evermore/Stairway/California are hellishly difficult to find playing TOTALLY CLEAN throughout. They were often played to death on most copies. Properly preserved clean players are extremely sought after. And when you give it a spin...you'll find out why. The audio is just phenomenal. All those vocal echoes can be heard - fully. Ok, so the up tempo numbers are gonna rock out like nothing else - that's a given. But to hear the THREE acoustic numbers with a perfectly clean background on a near-master copy is revelatory. I cannot rate this copy highly enough. It is a FINAL UPGRADE with the greatest of ease.
Cover (Vg+) Nice clean surfaces with just some light ageing in places. The interior looks fine, but please note the bump to the base of the spine which has caused a couple of creases. A bit of edge wear in place. Please note it appear that the openings have been trimmed down - reasonably successfully...don't expect a perfectly flat edge though. The spine is in very good order with slight wear. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
Inner (Vg-) It's a genuine original and early inner. The surfaces look ok with a little ageing. Please note each seam has split and has been tape up to secure.
