Description
Leighton Cello Concerto from Rafael Wallfisch on Audiophile Chandos. A nice low plays pressing in fabulous playback sound, grading near mint.
On issue, it reviewed thus:
"Bryden Thomson and Chandos, yet again have lost no time in recording two of his major works, one from the start, the other from the end of his career. Yet again, too, Chandos have provided a clear, full recording. In the Cello Concerto, the soloist Raphael Wallfisch—by now unchallenged champion of the British twentiethcentury repertory for his instrument—is close, but a balance is maintained with the equally intimately recorded Scottish National Orchestra. It is rare to hear this kind of precise balance in the concert hall, but which is the more natural musically it is hard to say.
The Concerto is a strong and compelling work. Its neglect is hard to understand. First performed in 1955, before Walton's Concerto had appeared, there are coincidental similarities between the two works in their latent romanticism. Or is it because both composers spent long periods in Italy that a Mediterranean warmth invaded their music?"
A near mint record in a near mint sleeve.
