This unusual album springs from a fascinating meeting of the visual and musical arts. It's origins date back to the 1860s, when a refreshing breeze of political liberalism and national consciousness swept Russia, waiting workers and all the arts to search their national tradition for creative subject matter. Composers like Moussorgsky based their idiom on Russian folk song, folk dance, and church chant, while architects like Victor Hartmann built in terms of full crafts and the medieval Slavonic styles.
In view of this community of interest, it is not surprising that Moussorgsky and Hartmann were close friends; And they had another turn of mind in common: both loved to draw sharply realistic pictures of human types, Moussorgsky in his songs and operatic characterizations, Hartmann in the countless little sketches he made for his private entertainment.
Victor Hartman, age 39, died suddenly in the summer of 1873. Some months later a memorial exhibition of his works was held in St. Petersburg. Moussorgsky attended, and from the more than 400 drawings and paintings on display he selected 10 for musical illustration and his most important work for piano solo, pictures at an exhibition. This music, composed in the spring of 1874 has grown in celebrity over the years, but the reputation of victor Hartman quickly evaporated. He was a totally forgotten man until the noted music critic Alfred Frankenstein delved deeply into the subject and rounded up all of Hartmann's surviving works.
In the booklet that accompanies this album is presented the cream of that exhaustive research-Reproductions of the Hartmann pictures that bear most closely on Moussorgsky's suite, plus Alfred Frankenstein's interesting comments and other artistic material he has gathered in connection with his most absorbing study.
