Ebay's DSR ratings are very confusing and many of my friends are no longer on here because they were snuffed out accidentally from nice people leaving bad ratings. Anything less than a 5 is harmful and will get your favorite seller removed! No reserve auctions!
THIS IS A GENUINE first-first press FROM 1957, not a re-issue. I have never seen this label, nor can I find any info on it. I know Rupe was less than scupulous, so the fact that it says stereo and CLEARLY is not, doesn't surprise me, but this is a version of the label that isn't in any of the books! This is a genuine 1957 pressing... it has the right weight, look, offset center groove for the 50s era changers, and the right numbers (SP 100, the first pressing of this LP, pressed in very small numbers from March to July of 1957 only!). The cover sports the OVAL logo in the top right corner (only on the first press) and SP 100 on both the cover (back and front) and LABEL. It is a genuine "FLUKE" from 1957... possibly the rarest LP ever made by Specialty. It says "stereo natural sound" which is odd because there were no stereo records at this time (AF released something in stereo in November of 1957, this was released in March), although the term was being used for tape formats... and the logo is not like any other that I've seen. I've written the guys at Both Sides Now to see if they can shed any light. It has to be an extremely rare transitional label from 1957. The record and cover rate at a strong VG (some would say VG+) with some scuff and some fine hairlines, but the original gloss is there. If this were mastered a little louder, this would sound excellent. The LP plays with some hiss (they all do), mild spindling to the label, no writing on labels or cover. The sound is about as good as it gets for an original specialty LP from 1957. There are very few originals like this in playable condition. This one is a NICE one in that it plays cleanly with no serious issues, scratches or skips. Turntables at the time often ATE these Lp's alive! The random non-repeating ticks and hiss are more likely from the way they were pressed than from actual wear. Tape on top and bottom seams, nice color, glossy front cover, back cover shows a very light stain and some very light age discolor, the spine is in tact and there is no writing on it (only on the originals from 1957). There are just two of these SP 100 pressings on Ebay for a LOT of money, and they admittedly are in much worse condition without the MEGA rare label variant. This could get up there! A good player, and I will include a copy of the first track on side one (usually the worst sounding at the edge and the biggest hit) to attest to that.
