Description

PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question.   OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week.   Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback.   We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery.   We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. ARCHIVE COPY! .......FINAL COLLECTION COPY!

............STILL IN FACTORY SHRINK WAPPER!

RARE and ALL MINT CLEAN....Original 1969 first pressing vinyl with the original printed CHESS RECORDS inner sleeve... Just listen to all the guitar wah-wah and fuzz tones !

This album benefits in the stereo format with all the speaker separation going on...psychedelic fuzzed blues....

Though Electric Mud gets all the attention, we've always felt that this session, featuring virtually the same backing group, was the stronger set. The simple declaration on the front intrigues us, “why wouldn’t Howlin’ Wolf like this record?” This blues jammer attempts to “update” the venerable Wolf with some of the most righteous Black psychedelic blues music ever laid down.

As soon as you drop the needle on “Spoonful” you immediately understand why Howlin’ Wolf (whose voice on this record decries the “odd” sounds of the electric guitar which, given that it’s 1968 when it’s recorded, means “strange” if you were wondering) and virtually ever single blues purist since 1969 has hated this record ...while SPOONFUL is just lowdown, funkatised blues-rock at its stankiest... The Wolf howls like always, with that big, crackling voice of his, and guitarist Pete Cosey and drummer Morgan Jennings put in that muddied, electrified, rockin' psych-soul sound...wow!

The fuzz guitar comes on especially strong on a funked-up rendition of "Tail Dagger" and it gets even greasier on "Smokestack Lightnin'", which cooks up a groove so down low and in-the-pocket it's insane...but we'll check on that in a minute.... You also can immediately understand how after 40+ years so many ears would find this sound completely thrilling. From an objective point of view, it doesn’t hold up to Wolf’s seminal recordings, but who cares! This record is so unbelievably bluesy & funky, it can’t help but be an underground classic. With Fuzzy, wah-wah guitars (3-4 guitars on each track!), poppin’ drums, freaky flute and even some amplified Eddie Harris soundin’ reeds, this was a match made in heaven tomany an ear...As good as the upbeat and wilder tracks like “Evil,” “Spoonful” and “Taildragger” sound, the best realized tracks seem to be the ones that have a slower tempo, including “Built For Comfort,” “Smokestack Lightning,” “Three Hundred Pounds of Joy,” and “Back Door Man” with the first being one of our all-time favorites. And don't forget the downright eerie “Moanin’ At Midnight,” because it best represents the otherworldly, slightly ominous feeling of Howlin’ Wolf’s music... and it finds a way to incorporate the sitar - a staple of the hippest psychedelic bands around at the time -- a lurching, droning, one-chorded groove featuring some deep down Mississippah harmonica wailings. But the smelly groove juice of the funk-in-motion is back for a lazy, sleazed, cruisin' take on "Built for Comfort '...as noted above, Smokestack Lightning' has a funkafied rolling groove. The Wolf's voice, always the ultimate conveyor of raw power, sounds like a dirty gravel road running through the deepest swamp in the darkest jungle. "The Red Rooster" is barely recognizable; riding a busy beat and a swampy guitar groove, it drones on relentlessly. The same stutter steppin' rhythm propels "Evil", turning it into a strange, trippy, wah wah-infested rocker. But the most intrictate rhythmic pattern is reserved for "Down in the Bottom", with its busy drums and pumping bass.

And oh, by the way, dig the sound of the drums on this record. So crisp, so tight, so very heavy....Maybe Howlin' Wolf didn't like this record, but it holds up remarkably well and should surprise the faintest doubter... for those into fuzzed blues and psych-funk, this is a pretty sweet smelling serving.
