Once At The Academy
Wire-Sound Records WIRED_36 12" 45 rpm 2016 (EU)
Limited to 1000 copies worldwide.
“Here is the explanation. Here is what happened. Dave Formula, he phoned me with the idea. The wheeze. Then Vediovis, god of disappointment, told me in no uncertain terms that the usual observances would both do, and would need to be done. But speaking personally, I’m doing this because, well, there’s this woman I need to impress”.
Magazine, Howard Devoto’s imperious post-punk / art-rock pioneers, issue a limited edition 45rpm 12” vinyl release.
Entitled ‘Once @ The Academy’, it features 5 tracks recorded in stereo multi-track live from their hometown of Manchester, England on the ‘Real Life & Thereafter’ 2009 ‘comeback' tour. The Magazine line-up at these shows was : Howard Devoto – Vocals; Barry Adamson – Bass Guitar & Backing Vocals; John Doyle – Drums; Dave Formula – Keyboards; Noko – Guitar.
This ‘extended play’ covers the band’s initial halcyon days of their first three album releases – ‘Real Life’, ’Secondhand Daylight’ and ’The Correct Use Of Soap’.
This is a black vinyl release and is limited to 1000 copies only. It is packaged with both a deluxe outer and deluxer inner sleeve. It rotates on your turntable at forty-five rpm and clocks in at a total of twenty-three and a half minutes.
“The striking thing is not only that they sound fantastic, but how contemporary their 30 year old material seems. Even Devoto’s lady friend would be impressed” – The Guardian
“Magazine were influential, brilliant, but never had a hit. These gigs are a cherry on a cake or two. Undoubtedly the comeback of the year” – The Independent
“It was remarkable. Nearly 30 years since they last played and they were everything you could hope for. It was strangely free of nostalgia. Just great songs, really well played” – Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)

Note About Shipping To The U.S.
We are located in Canada, but have registered ourselves on eBay.com instead of eBay.ca because it gives us significantly better global exposure. The problem with this is that eBay wants us to charge shipping appropriate to US, where media mail and other options make for fairly reasonable delivery costs. We tried it for a while but ended up losing money on shipping or having to cancel the orders because we couldn't afford to ship for those rates. To manage this we have set the US shipping to run a calculator based on an American location (we chose Plattsburgh as fairly close) and charging according to UPS pricing. This avoids the cancellation issue, but appears to the buyer to be a prohibitive shipping cost and misrepresents the shipping as being only expedited. If you give us your postal code we will see if we can offer a more reasonable option, but generally we can get a single LP by air to most places in the continental US for $11, a few bucks less for ground.
