WHAT IS AN "ACETATE" ?

I guess the best way to explain it would be like this: having an acetate for a song is almost like having the "negatives" for a photo. Acetates are extremely rare, and in some cases, are one-of-a-kind. An acetate disc is cut prior to the cutting of the master disc which will be sent off to the pressing plant where mass production of retail copies begin. The reference disc (or "acetate") allows the artist, producer, engineer, and other interested parties to check the quality of the tape-to-disc recording process and make any necessary changes to ensure that the audio fidelity of the master disc will be as close as possible to that of the original master tape. Even though referred to as an "acetate", it is essentially an aluminium disc coated with a fine film of nitro-celluolose lacquer with no acetate in it at all!

The surface is softer than vinyl, there is little to no background noise, and when it is played the sound is as close to the master tape as you will ever get.

They do not come in a frame. There is NO picture sleeve, and no special artwork on the record labels. Most acetates are 10" round, but the actual music record grooves are usually 7" in diameter. They're almost always single-sided (the other side is totally blank and shiny, with no grooves and no label).

So if you have an "acetate", you have a disc that was theoretically cut for the producer, engineer and artist to listen to.

Some acetate records have different mixes of a recording, rather than the released version. If you have a commercially-issued version of the recording on hand, you may want to compare the two records to see how they differ.  The alternate version may be one-of-a-kind, and the value is much higher than simply a released version on an acetate record.  Acetates are rare enough anyway, though, as there are usually ten or fewer copies made of them.

Due to their rarity, some acetates can command high prices at auction. Brian Epstein's collection of Beatles acetates fetched between $1,000 and $10,000 per disc.  An acetate from The Velvet Underground, containing music that would later appear on their first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico, sold on eBay in 2006 for  $25,200.

"Gone Too Soon" is a song recorded by Michael Jackson It was written by Buz Kohan and Larry Grossman (composer) and co-produced by Bruce Swedien and Michael Jackson for the album, Dangerous (1991). The song was also mixed by Swedien, and featured instrumentation by artists such as Steve Porcaro, Michael Boddicker, Abraham Laboriel, and Paulinho Da Costa. "Gone Too Soon" was dedicated to the memory of Jacksons friend Ryan White a teenager from Kokomo, Indiana who came to national attention, after being expelled from his school for having HIV AIDS The song was released on December 6, 1993, as the ninth and final single from the Dangerous album. Following its release - on World AIDS Day of 1993 - "Gone Too Soon" became a moderate chart success in several countries: France, Germany, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland and the UK. The song was not released in the US, but became a hit in Africa, where it charted at number 3. "Gone Too Soon" was promoted with a music video directed by Bill DiCicco, which showed footage of Jackson and White together, as well as scenes from White’s funeral. A live performance by Jackson at Bill Clinton s inaugural celebration also served as a promotional platform, for both the song and AIDS-related funding. "Gone Too Soon" later received more exposure, following the deaths of both Diana, Princess of Wales and Jackson himself.

     Ryan White was an American teenager from Kokomo, Indiana who became a national poster child for HIV AIDS in the United States after being expelled from school because of his infection. While treated with hemophilia , he became infected with HIV from a contaminated blood treatment and, when diagnosed in 1984, was given six months to live. Though doctors said he posed no risk to other students, AIDS was poorly understood at the time, and when White tried to return to school, many parents and teachers in Kokomo rallied against his attendance. A lengthy legal battle with the school system ensued, and media coverage of the struggle made White into a national celebrity and spokesman for AIDS research and public education. During this time, White was befriended by singer Michael Jackson. White’s mother Jeanne commented on the friendship, "It’s a really good relationship. They have a good time. Michael treats Ryan like he’s not sick. And Ryan treats Michael like he’s not a celebrity. „The pop star bought the teenager a red Ford Mustang and invited White and his mother to spend time at his Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara, California. Surprising his doctors, White lived five years longer than initially predicted, and died in April 1990, shortly before he would have completed high school. His funeral was attended by Jackson, as well as English musician Elton John, media personality Phil Donahue, First Lady of the United States Barbara Bush, and 1000 other mourners. The prelude (music) to the song was composed, arranged and conducted by American musician Marty Paich, Bruce Swedien, who had worked extensively on Jacksons previous albums was drafted to record and mix the ballad. The music engineer also served as the co-producer for "Gone Too Soon", along with Jackson. Prior to the production of the finalized version of "Gone Too Soon", Jackson had recorded a demo version of the song, which featured different vocals and a "perfect sunflower" lyric. To date, the demo has not received an official release.

At the 52nd Presidential Inaugural Gala Michael Jackson dedicated his performance to Ryan White, and used the occasion to plead with the incoming president, Bill Clinton for funding toward AIDS-related research.
