Molly Hatchet Steve Holland Flirting With Disaster

Presentation  Award

An incredible piece for the Molly Hatchet fan, up for sale is a presentation award made specifically for and presented to Steve Holland, in commemoration of selling the first 100,000 copies of their album Flirting With Disaster.   There were only 5 of these awards made ? one for each band member.

The light silver custom frame is approximately 18" x 14" and behind the glass is the Flirting With Disaster album featuring the art of Frank Frazetta.  The silver commemorative plaque reads in full:

PRESENTED TO

STEVE HOLLAND

IN COMMEMORATION OF THE RELEASE OF

THE MOLLY HATCHET ALBUM

FLIRTING WITH DISASTER

SEPTEMBER 5, 1979

Steve Holland is one of the two original founding members of Molly Hatchet.

 Item History

During Steve Holland’s divorce, he stored some items, including this award, in a friend’s public storage unit.  The friend neglected to pay the bill and the storage contents were auctioned off as a lot.  This included two framed picture discs and a Grammy.  The individual who purchased the lot kept the Steve Holland award as part of their private collection and took excellent care of it for 25 years.  At one point, The Hard Rock Café in New York offered to buy it, but their offer was declined.  During our recent economic recession in the USA, they sold it to me, explaining personal financial difficulties.

I have personally contacted Keith Johnson, President of Paradise Management, and Steve Holland’s current manager, in an effort to authenticate the piece.  Via email and phone conversations, he acknowledged that Steve Holland verbally verified to him that he had indeed lost the award around the time of his divorce, when he has stored it in a friend’s public storage unit, and when the friend didn’t pay the bill, he lost his stored belongings in a public auction.

When considering selling this piece, I consulted Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills who deals in rock memorabilia from Madonna to Elvis Presley to Michael Jackson to The Beatles memorabilia.  After submitting multiple photographs to their experts for potential handling of the auction, they said that a “conservative” opening amount at auction would be $800 with an anticipated final sale price being much higher.   (They also said their minimum for handling items is well above what we are willing to sell at this point, or they would be selling this piece for us.)  With the percentage they would’ve taken, we are able to offer the piece on eBay for the bargain price of $900 and net the same if you’d paid almost double through Julien’s or Christie’s.

The glass made it very difficult to photograph this piece so I ended up taking the photographs from an angle to prevent it from just looking like a mirror. Three of the corners of glass have very small chipped damage below the bezel.  The lower right hand corner of the glass has a small break where a very small chunk of glass broke out. Please see photograph with penny to show size of this.  The other two corners, with the chips being below the bezel won't photograph well enough to show up.  I want to be upfront that the glass is original and the corners show signs of being almost 40 years old.  I have never considered having the glass replaced, as I believe in keeping pieces original.

As a life-long collector of Molly Hatchet memorabilia, I have always considered this to be my Holy Grail of Molly Hatchet finds.  Now it could be yours.
