Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This excellent LP from RCA (VICS 1031 EX, German Teldec · Telefunken-Decca pressing, red/silver “Living Stereo” label, original inner sleeve included) features Pierre Monteux powerful and atmospheric account of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14, superbly recorded in the warm acoustics of the Sofiensaal, Vienna during 20-24 October 1958 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on truly resplendent form (producer: John Culshaw / engineer: James Brown).
Monteux was one of the great Berlioz conductors of the last Century, having played under (as principal violist) and worked beside (as assistant conductor) the legendary Édouard Colonne, himself a friend and colleague of Berlioz.
Incidentally, the striking cover art reprints Hieronymus Busch van Aeken’s “Bruchstück eines jüngsten Gerichts”. Liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket are provided in English (by Alfred Frankenstein, Music and Art Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle), as well as in German and French (by Dr. Hans Koeltzsch).
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is edgewear, bumping at corners, some creasing, and mild discoloration/ringwear, and a former price sticker to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners’ markings, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive in appearance – overall, a very good collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT++ and the playback is superb – overall, a fine collector's copy.
