STORY OF MOONDOG

Prestige Records 7099, original issue. Recorded 1957. W. 50th Street black-on-yellow label. Mint- on play grading. Several handling and paper scuffs in the 50-year history of this disc; very occasional faint pops are not cyclically associated with any of them. Sound quality and pressing quality very strong. Jacket has ancient rubber stamp from original retailer showing “jazz”—once on back cover, and once on disc label, as in second photo. Ballpoint “1959” in upper left of back cover. Moderate contact wear to front and back surfaces, but generally very strong. A solid example of a cult classic. also includes New York Times press cutting from 1989 heralding the return of Moondog. This is one of over 200 LPs being consigned on auction weekly between now and Spring 2007 from the well-kept and thorough collection of the late sculptor Bradford Graves, a key participant in the operations of New York performance space Soundscape. The collection ranges from Art Blakey to Han Bennink, with especially strong showings of Saturn, FMP, ICP, and US private pressings from the early Seventies. Some prizes and surprises in every batch.
