At 66 the father of "Ethio-jazz" has seen his reputation come full circle, with his trailblazing 1970s albums in vogue with young hipsters. This quickfire collaboration with UK troupe Heliocentrics is a treat, fusing Astatke's delicate vibraphone and swaying, sinuous brass lines with the Helios' own influences, notably James Brown's funk and Sun Ra's cosmic jazz. At times, as on "Live From Tigre Lounge", the groove is hard and wild. At others, like "An Epic Story", the collective conjure an otherworldly atmosphere that hovers between Addis Ababa and Neptune, a dance of shimmering harp, violin and psychedelic keyboards.
