Released in 1971, the debut solo album from Blackpool-born Graham Nash is as intimate as it is incisive. 'Military Madness' and 'Chicago' confront war and protest head-on, yet the album's real strength lies in its softest moments: 'Simple Man' and 'Sleep Song' are raw with post-breakup ache, the latter sketched out with paper, comb and cello. 'I Used to Be a King' carries pedal steel from Jerry Garcia and a cracked dignity that lingers. 'Wounded Bird' clocks in under two minutes but devastates; 'Be Yourself' lets Rita Coolidge's keys sparkle beneath Terry Reid's co-write. It's an album steeped in the slow-motion wreckage of lost love - Nash had just split from Joni Mitchell - but its moral centre is no less firm. With appearances from Neil Young, Phil Lesh and David Lindley, it's a high-profile cast orbiting a voice at its most disarmingly human.
