**NICE* ORIGINAL 7-inch Berliner Gramophone Record #7W "WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE" PLAYED BY SOUSA'S BAND.
Handwritten on the master was "Henry Higgins Sousa's Band". This record may have been recorded as early 1896 but there is no date on the record and my reference books provide no recording date. However, this has a VERY LOW catalog number (7W) and my reference books indicate that Berliner Gramophone recordings NEAR this catalog number were made in 1896 but actual recording date is unknown.
This record plays GREAT on my modern turntable with as clear, crisp sound as can be expected from such a primitive record. As with almost all early Berliner Gramophone records there are surface imperfections from the primitive mixture used and this one has a couple of small raised surface "lumps" that do not affect play.
This recording features the finale (as much as could fit on a Berliner record) of Rossini’s William Tell Overture which is commonly recognized as The Lone Ranger theme. It is an absolutely captivating recording by Sousa’s Band and surely one of the earliest recordings of it. There is a slight waviness to the sound due to the very primitive recording technology in use at the time which adds a sense of appreciation for such an early recording.
Original Berliner Gramophone Records in this fine condition are very difficult to find indeed especially by Sousa' Band.
