"Drake recorded his last album in a couple of nights, mailed the tapes to Island Records and checked himself into a psychiatric ward. If the music were as dark as the lyrics, it might be unlistenable. But Drake's soothing vocals and unadorned acoustic picking make the album unfold with supernatural tenderness." — Rolling Stone
For millions of viewers, a Volkswagen TV commercial in 1999 featuring Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" was the first time they had heard the 1972 song or its long-since-departed folk-rocker. Today, Drake's avid cult following continues to grow.
Three albums was all that Drake left the world before he passed away in 1974 at the age of 26. Pink Moon, Drake's third and final album, was released by Island Records in 1972, featuring only Nick's vocals, guitar and piano. This is Drake's sparest album and it's filled with haunting tracks that have him singing moodily along. Drake's abiilty to come up with complicated jazzy chords on his guitar is highlighted by the way this album gives him a warm, intimate space in which to unwind. Featuring the tracks "Pink Moon," "Place To Be," "Road," "Parasite," "Ride," and "From The Morning."
Now, to mark the album's 40th anniversary, Universal Music re-presents the album in an exactly-replicated vinyl pressing, remastered by the original co-producer and engineer: John Wood at Abbey Road Studios. The album is pressed on heavyweight vinyl with the original gatefold sleeve, inner sleeve, paper labels, the promotional shop poster and a fascimile of Nick's handwritten lyrics to four of the songs, all housed in a box showing the original master tape box from which the vinyl was mastered.

NICK DRAKE BRYTER LAYTER 180 GRAM LP BOX SET
Already Out Of Print!
180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl! Re-mastered by John Wood at Abbey Road Studios From Original Analogue Master Tapes!
An Authentic Reproduction of the 1970 First Pressing with Original Textured Sleeve, Audiophile Vinyl, Replica Shop Poster, Live Mini-Poster, Reprint of Nick's Handwritten Set List + Bonus Voucher with a Choice of Download Formats Including High Definition 24 Bit and Dubbed from Disc IF STILL AVAILABLE!
Following the huge success of Nick's third album "Pink Moon" on deluxe vinyl comes his second album "Bryter Layter" in a similar deluxe vinyl format.
The album is an exact replica of the original 1970 release: It is pressed on heavyweight audiophile vinyl, and remastered from 'near' original master tapes by the album's original engineer John Wood. For although the original tapes were unusable, John Wood had made a safety copy of the album in 1970 and it is from this that the new album has been struck.
It comes in a box containing the original shop poster, a smaller "Live" poster/brochure and a reprint of Nick's handwritten set list used for his live appearances, together with reproductions of the master tape and box lids. It is housed in an Island card inner bag in a single pocket textured sleeve just as the original release would have been.
Recent vinyl pressings of Bryter Layter have been poor quality, illegal counterfeits; this edition is as close to an original pressing as it is possible to get. Original copies change hands for high collectors prices.
After crafting a debut album full of beauteous, somber chamber-folk, Nick Drake pulled something of an about-face with the follow-up, Bryter Layter. With a bright, sparkling production and orchestrations that occasionally border on Easy Listening, the framework is light and airy where Five Leaves Left was dark and foreboding. The key, however, is that Drake's artfully expressed inner turmoil peeks through at every turn in the lyrics and in his understated-but-heartfelt vocal delivery.
"At the Chime of a City Clock" finds Drake facing existential despair at every turn, despite an almost-lugubrious string arrangement. Perhaps the crucial moment of Bryter Layter occurs on "Poor Boy", where female backing vocalists literally mock the singer's anguished laments. Clearly, for as much as Drake's heart and soul were bared in every note of his music, he was self-aware enough to know that his disillusioned-romantic view of the world was one that put him on the fringes of society. Of course, some 25 years later, his early-1970s work would find a much wider audience, even though the initial era of the sensitive singer/songwriter had long since passed.
Originally released November 1, 1970.

FIVE LEAVES BOX - 180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl! Mastered by John Wood at Abbey Road Studios From a 24bit Digital File made from the Original Master Tapes!
An Authentic Reproduction of the 1969 First Pressing with Audiophile Vinyl, Replica Shop Poster, Reprint of Nick's Handwritten Lyrics to Two Songs PLUS Limited Time Bonus Voucher with a Choice of Download Formats including High Definition 24 Bit & Dubbed from Disc IF STILL AVAILABLE!
This first studio album from Nick Drake, which has garnered posthumous praise and remarkable all-time greatest album ratings, is an exact replica of the original 1969 release: it is pressed on heavyweight audiophile vinyl and remastered from near-original master tapes by the album's original engineer, John Wood. The original tape was unusable and although there were tape copies the best source was using a 24bit digital file made from the original tape when re-mastered for CD some 12 years ago.
The deluxe release comes in a box containing the original shop poster, a smaller "live" poster and a reprint of Nick's handwritten set list used for his live appearances, together with reproductions of the master tape and box lids. The disc is housed in a single-pocket, textured sleeve just as the original release would have been with an Island Records card inner bag.
As before, this title has been remastered by John Wood at Abbey Road Studios and pressed using wholly analogue processes onto 180 gram virgin vinyl. The box set also includes limited time options to download the tracks in MP3, Hi-Res FLAC files or the new DFD (dubbed-from-disc) files for that authentic listening experience.
Following the success of Nick Drake's second and third albums "Bryter Layter" and "Pink Moon" on deluxe vinyl, comes his first studio album "Five Leaves Left" in a similar deluxe vinyl format, becoming part of the ReDISCovered series. Poverty stricken students of 1968 rolled their own - not for them the cigarette temptations of a pack of 10 cigarettes, no, their tobacco thrills came hand rolled, usually in Rizla papers which kindly reminded the participant that they were about to run out, with a yellow interleaf paper with bold red type stating ONLY FIVE LEAVES LEFT.
Nick Drake's bucolic autumnal shades in his debut album of a similar name, heralded a new signing for Island Records: not traditional enough to be folk, not weird enough to be psychedelic, Drake avoided the pitfalls of what was expected and collaborated with producer Joe Boyd, orchestrator Robert Kirby and recording engineer John Wood to make a singular and almost unique record released to a largely indifferent media.
"Understatement is the key to his songs and performances' general success, which makes the combination of his vocals and Rocky Dzidzornu's congas on 'Three Hours' and the lovely 'Cello Song,' to name two instances, so effective. Danny Thompson is the most regular side performer on the album, his bass work providing subtle heft while never standing in the way of the song -- kudos well deserved for Boyd's production as well." - Ned Raggett, allmusic.
"[T]he string arrangement by Harry Robinson on 'River Man' - possibly Drake's finest song - succinctly turned his Delius-meets-folk-jazz opus into something that no one had ever heard before. It's a key text for Drake fans, containing the return to nature matched against the infidelities of city life: A theme he would return to again and again, while the album title's sly reference to smoker's delights (as well as 'Thoughts Of Mary Jane') showed that Drake was no stranger to the standard musician's indulgences." - Chris Jones, BBC Review

Family Tree is a compilation of unheard and/or unreleased songs which include Nick Drake originals as well as obscure covers of songs by Jackson C. Frank, Dylan and Blind Boy Fuller.
Family Tree presents recordings that precede Nick Drake's three studio albums, Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. Recorded in the 1960s at Nick's home and in Aix-En-Provence, France, these are period amateur home recordings that capture a burgeoning songwriting genius learning his trade. The songs range from folk and blues standards to early influential compositions by his mother Molly and recordings of Nick made by his colleague and arranger Robert Kirby at Cambridge University in 1968. They are presented here in their raw, lo-fidelity original condition, remastered by Nick's sound engineer John Wood, and are accompanied by an eight-page explanatory booklet.
Among the self-penned tunes are the haunting "Leaving Me Behind" and "Come Into the Garden". Also included are performances by his mother Molly and sister Gabrielle.

NICK DRAKE A TREASURY 2004 OUT OF PRINT UNIVERSAL IMPORT LP A singular talent who passed almost unnoticed during his brief lifetime, Nick Drake produced three studio albums of sombre beauty: Five Leaves Left (1969), Bryter Layter (1970), and Pink Moon (1972). It?s impossible to keep count of the contemporary artists who cite Drake as an inspiration, but a cursory round-up includes R.E.M., Paul Weller, Travis, Portishead, The Coral, Coldplay, David Gray, Super Furry Animals and Beth Orton. Along with household names of his creative lifetime--The Stones, The Beatles, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix--his albums have become an unofficial set text for anyone passionate about music.
A Treasury is a true collection in the basic sense, this single-disc LP--with notes written by Peter Paphides specifically for this vinyl release--contains songs from Drake’s three primary albums, with a few tracks taken from Made to Love Magic. Both the words and music on this release further illustrate the great depth and passion of Drake?s songwriting among the canon of his recordings from 1969 to 1972, the year Pink Moon debuted.
A Treasury is the definitive collection of 15 classic songs by Nick Drake. With all the profile that he received earlier in the year for his "rarities" release, this is the perfect album for curious music lovers to pick up.

1. Introduction

Nick Drake Made to Love Magic 180g GRAM LIMITED EDITION LP
180g Vinyl Reissue of Compilation Album!
A companion piece to his three studio albums, Made to Love Magic is a Nick Drake album comprised of rarities, outtakes, and remixes, including the song, Tow The Line. The earliest recordings on this album stem from his time at Cambridge University in 1968 where he met and performed with fellow student Robert Kirby. In the Spring of 1968, Kirby recorded several of Nick’s new songs. Luckily these tapes survived and are now released here. River Man is the only version known to exist without orchestration and is thought to detail Nick’s days in Cambridge, whereas Mayfair exists here in its earliest known format, a wry and light hearted view of the London Nick was getting to know.
On leaving Cambridge and entering a recording studio, Nick was writing what was to become his debut album, Five Leaves Left. Joey and Clothes of Sand, both recorded towards the end of 1968, are two songs that never made it onto the album. These two songs plus the alternate version of The Thoughts of Mary Jane previously appeared on the compilation album Time Of No Reply. In early studio sessions Nick used Richard Hewson as an orchestrator, but his unhappiness with the results led him back to colleague Robert Kirby for most future arrangements. By this time the debut album was already too full for Magic and Time Of No Reply so Robert’s original arrangements remained on manuscript only. It was to these scores that Robert returned in 2003 and a new ‘original’ arrangement was recorded. You now hear the song as Nick intended it to be heard.
The melting pot that was Island Records in the late ’60s caused many artists to collaborate with each other. Label boss and producer Chris Blackwell was a strong believer in cross-fertilization both in musical styles and personalities. Nick was friends with both John Martyn and Richard Thompson amongst others on the varied roster. In March 1969 Nick found himself in North London’s Morgan Studios — a rare departure from Sound Techniques where most of his work was recorded — to play a version of Three Hours with the late ‘Reebop’ Kwaakhu Baah on congas and an unknown flautist.
This version was recorded 2 months before the one that appears on Five Leaves Left. It was discovered on a multi track and is released in a mixed version for the first time. It is longer and more relaxed than its final version almost amounting to a ‘jam’ session. After the release of the Pink Moon album, Nick returned to the studio to record what was thought to be his last 4 songs — Black Eyed Dog, Rider On The Wheel, Voices, and Hanging On A Star. These were hastily mixed and later appeared on the Fruit Tree box set. Hanging On A Star was a newly discovered take of the song with, it was judged, a better vocal; Nick recording voice and guitar separately for the first time. It was during this recent mix that the tape was allowed to run on and Tow The Line made itself known, never having been mixed or, indeed, heard since 1974.
By returning to the team of John Wood and Robert Kirby, and with the full co-operation of Nick’s sister Gabrielle, we have, in this release, a companion piece to the three studio albums: Five Leaves Left, Bryter, and Pink Moon.
Made To Love Magic is a fitting addition to the short but all-encompassing canon of work Nick recorded in his few years in the studio.
