Brief Info: Issued long after his first self-titled first solo album (also on offer), this fared little better with many critics of the time, but it still topped the UK album charts. This a true solo work in all sense of the word, that experiments with synthesisers and electronics, it being far less conventional than just about all else he had done previously. Nothing wrong with change, but it did get mixed reactions. Quirky and an attempt to be more modern, especially with the youth of the day into punk and new wave. Superbly recorded and beautifully pressed, this is fantastic copy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): only a light corner dink stop a near mint grading. An unlaminated gatefold format with semi-shiny, fairly smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the double-sided illustrated and lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: A small light crease on the top left corner tip, that apart it’s immaculate. Very clean, fresh and attractive and very close to reminding of new.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The same light corner crease, but nothing else to fault again.

Top Edges: Both very straight, flat, flush and unworn.

Bottom Edges: Largely as above, any rub traces bordering on minuscule.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The closed front and open back entrance are ultra clean, equally sharp with barely any hint of wear at all. Both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Pristine Mint, solid and quite thick, straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, also perfectly centred with no light fading to the deep blue surface, they hardly get better than this.

Corners: Devoid of tip rubbing, just the low impact dink on the top left corner as mentioned already. So a little creasing to the tip are of that one, but even that retains excellent shape, all others pristine.

Cover Summary: A fantastic all-round example of this quite wear-prone 1980’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find better. This very fresh and attractive item should please most collectors. The small tip crease apart, this looks almost new.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): with just a small scuff to one side edge, being white, it registers little and there is NO split or repair. A card, unlined lyric and illustrated inner printed both sides. It has the wide recessed top opening edge that is also crisp and neat. Very clean, fresh and white, totally unaged, creased or marked.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): with just a light surface scuff each side, the one on side two mostly on the run-in grooves – neither have any sound whatsoever. Those apart, little else, any surface traces very few, ultra fine and faint as seen under bright light. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence, this record plays beautifully, it from the same lot as many other Beatles related items I am (or was) offering. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little bar the scuffs registers, these are light and small anyway. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This impressive second solo Paul McCartney album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Superbly recorded, this is an album I really like, it’s quirky and different, it still sounds undated and fresh today. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and mostly carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
