Label Conditions: Both immaculate: very clean and attractive with only a single ultra light and faint spindle trace on each side (but look hard).

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 95 grams. A lightweight record but in no way reflects in the quality of the sound which is fantastic.

Brief Info: One of the great horror films of its generation and without doubt one of the greatest soundtracks within the genre. This is brilliant and in great demand from rock collectors as well as soundtrack fans. The ‘Phantasm’ theme is simply superb and gets in the mind very quickly - it returns from time-to-time to keep the atmosphere going. This is mainly synth-based and creepy and addictive. Not easy to find and elusive, this copy will prove near impossible to find better, although a thin pressing, so typical of the era, this plays to perfection and is my now my definitive copy to listen-to anywhere. Do not just consider this a soundtrack, this would be a great album in its own right - an indispensable classic of its type and a great one to play at any Halloween party.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ a single unlaminted format. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker Ltd.

Cover Front: Looking great with barely any traces of wear. Some fine surface hairline creases, mainly on the spine edge and ultra faint rim traces but little else to fault on this fresh and clean surface.

Cover Back: Same again with no ringwear or rubbing. [WARNING: this has a very gory scene from the film].

Top Edge: Barely any wear.

Bottom Edge: Very slight rub traces.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed with just a few light surface creases that have mildly clipped the text in a couple of places.

Corners: Slight tip rubs and a couple of tiny tip creases. All retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile late 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please most collectors.

The Inner: The plain white unlined inner has very lightly darkened with age but is uncreased or split.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) with nothing more than a couple of micro-fine hairlines that have no effect on play. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black but lightly pressed. I guess all will be same, this is a first pressing. A high percentage of vinyl was thinly pressed at this time but in no way reflects in the sound quality of this record which is immaculate throughout. A copy again played once before my play-grade. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliantly creepy soundtrack plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Practically devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Addictive electro-synth music for the connoisseur, this is a cult collector’s item and it’s easy to hear why. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove near impossible to find better and can be very strongly recommended.

What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. Really rare and expensive albums will be Double Boxed. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
