How can you tell a genuine 1st UK pressing?
Genuine 1st complete UK pressing have the following - which this one has:
Gatefold Cover: Very dark blue gatefold cover made of thick cardboard.
Front Cover: On some (but not all) 1st issues, one side of the gatefold cover is sealed. This one is sealed.
Back Cover: Inverted prism. In the upper right corner, it says: " SHVL 804, (IE 064-05249), stereo."
Inside Cover: "Printed and made by Garrod and Lofthouse Ltd." in blue text in lower left corner.
Cover Sticker: Some copies had a round purple title sticker on the cover and some did not. This one did.
Inner Sleeve: Black inner sleeve.
Pyramid Poster: Blue pyramid. There is no catalog number on the poster.
Group Poster: A six-pane group shot poster in landscape style with "SHVL 804" in the bottom right corner.
Brown graphics sticker: A brown/dark blue/yellow/green self-adhesive sticker with Dark Side of the Moon graphics. Matte. The backing paper is tan with 45 degree angled diagonal stripes of dark brown from the top to bottom, and "FasPrint Permanent," and "Crack Back Patented." on the paper (also found printed on a white backing paper with lighter colors on the front). There is no catalog number on the sticker.
Yellow graphics sticker: A yellow/sky blue/green self-adhesive sticker with Dark Side of the Moon graphics. Matte. The backing paper is tan with 45 degree angled diagonal stripes of dark brown from the top to bottom, and "FasPrint Permanent," and "Crack Back Patented." on the paper (also found printed on a white backing paper with lighter colors on the front). There is no catalog number on the sticker.
Labels: Black Harvest label with solid light blue triangle (prism). At the bottom center of the label it says "Made in GT Britain."
Matrix & Stamper Numbers: Machine stamped A2/B2 matrix numbers (there were no A1 or B1 matrices) + machine stamped 'number' (9.o'clock) and 'letters' (3.o'clock) in the run-out 'dead' wax. There were around 30 or so 1st pressings of this LP with a solid blue prism - the earliest possible stampers are 1G & 1G. The stampers on this one are particularly rare as they had not been documented, until now, in the leading authority (Vernon Fitch - The Pink Floyd Archives 1997-2010) website.
Text around the top edge of the label starts at 10 o'clock and says: “The Gramophone Co., Ltd. All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved.
Text around the bottom edge of the label starts at 8 o'clock and says: “Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting, and copying of this record prohibited.
Cover: Excellent+. Has the purple DSOTM 'sticker'. No writings, doodles or seam splits. Light wear to corners only. It is difficult to get a genuine 1st pressing unlaminated 'blue' cover in nice condition. Not quite mint but this is one of the best around.
Labels: Excellent. Some age spotting/foxing only.
Black poly-lined Inner Sleeve: Mint.
Posters: 2 x 1st pressing posters - 'pyramids' and 'Pink Floyd'. Mint.
Postcards: 2 x peelable sticky-back postcards - 'yellow' & 'blue' pyramids with the tell-tale 1st pressing brown stripes on the back. Both remain unused and are Mint.
Vinyl: Nice sheen to the vinyl. Play tested. Looks VG (some hairlines and a some light non feelable scratches). Plays VG(-). Does have some light crackle throughout and occasional pops. No skips/jumps on my system. Not mint or even Excellent but a reasonable vinyl worthy of adding to somebody's rare Pink Floyd collection. Gradings.......
Mint - The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality.
Excellent - The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.Very Good - The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.
Good - The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.
Fair - The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise, it may even jump.
Poor - The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc
Bad - The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
