The currently listed promotional copy represents the incredibly rare Tower Records promotional release. It was pressed by Capitol Records at its Scranton, PA plant and equipped not only with a large “PROMOTIONAL RECORDS” black rubber ink stamp but also a radio station DJ timing strip, which we’ve come across with on the promotional copies of other Capitol Records releases of the same period, but never on “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” album. Perhaps, this timing strip was present only on the Mono copies, which are extremely rare in themselves. This promotional copy, just like the other Pink Floyd promotional records currently listed at our auction, comes from the collection of a DJ who worked most of his life at a local radio station in Los Angeles. In spite of the copy’s age and the fact that it was actively used at a radio station, the vinyl is in great condition and can be graded as Very Good Plus. This is the best condition of the Mono pressing that we’ve come across in the recent years. Original brownish orange Tower Records 1st label variation which can be found on the releases dating from 1964 to 1968. The labels contain a large Tower “t” logo, the Mono “T-5093” catalog number and “Mfd. In U.S.A.” text at the bottom edge. The US version of the album, including this promotional release, altered the songs on the album from the original UK release to include the “See Emily Play” single and exclude the “Astronomy Domine”, “Flaming” and “Bike” tracks, with the names of the “Pow R. Toc H.” and “Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk” being misspelled on the cover and labels (The name of the “Pow R. Toc H.” track is indicated as “Pow R. Toch” on the back cover and “Pow R. Roch” on the label). Very early 1st Capitol Records, Scranton, PA plant pressing with the Mono mixes of the songs that were done at a different time and are different than the stereo mixes. The runout grooves contain the “IAM in a Triangle” plant identifier and the following full matrix numbers: Side 1: T1-5093-G2 IAM; Side 2: T2-5093-F1 IAM. This promotional copy comes with the original Tower Records plain white inner sleeve.

I grade the cover as Excellent Minus. It's very clean and doesn't have any splits, writing or residue. The cover has some very light hint of ring wear at the top of the front cover and some light shelf wear on the back cover. The sturdy spine contains a fully readable text. The glossy vinyl is graded as Very Good Plus. It has some very light non-feelable surface hairlines as well as scuffs from the original paper inner sleeve which don't affect the playback in any way. The scuff- and wear-free labels are very clean and are graded as Excellent. The vinyl sounds great with just some very light occasional static which most likely could go away if the record was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
