Over Tom Helsen

When Tom Helsen (°1976) was discovered in 1996, during Humo’s Rock Rally (a prestigious alternative music contest), he had only been playing music for two years. Out of more than 700 contestants he landed a terrific second place. To promote his one-man band, he recorded a first single in the fall of 1996(‘like her vacation’), and played a number of concerts and gigs in clubs, all on his own.. After a while however, he got tired of the idea of being looked upon as a rocking troubadour and decided to start a band.
With Desmond van Weddingen on drums and Wim Janssens on bass Tom found two partners in crime back in March 1997. Together they started working on a first full album. The trio set up changed the sound completely. If you need to label it, Tom Helsen could be sonsiderd the perfect mix of Counting Crows and Buffalo Tom.
The song ‘All you broken homers’ did quite well on national radio and resulted in a lot of concerts throughout Belgium, Holland and Spain (Tom was the support act for bands such as Texas, the Posies,16 Horsepower, the Corrs…).

Steady the band (now a quartet with Geert Peeters on bass) continued working on their second album, released in the fall of 2000. In the meantime, the only sign of life had been the beautiful single ‘Tom is doing great’, resulting in the new album title. Musically, he learned a lot from the Novastar singer Joost Zweegers, who produced three songs on the album. The result was an album featuring 10 beautiful songs with melancholic undertone and displaying more of his unique voice than ever before. The singles ‘Slowly’ and ‘When Marvin Calls’ signified the breakthrough for the band and settled Tom’s name for good.

In 2004 Tom released his third album 'More than gold' and started touring again with his new band. With the hit singles 'Goodbye', 'Out of something', 'Don't let them get you down' and 'Rocket' the album did extremely well in both the alternative as the national radio charts.
The song 'Goodbye' was chosen as the recurrent of a Portuguese TV series (of which the soundtrack sold over 50.000 copies). And a Portuguese boys band covered the song resulting in over 300.000 copies sold in Portugal. Still very successful with his own band, Tom toured with Dido on her European 2004 tour as the support act. Proving that he is more than able to entertain an audience with his fragile songs.

After 10 years hard work Tom reached the point where he always wanted to be. Now he is fully aware what he is capable of and where it can lead him.

On his 3rd album ‘More than gold’ Tom collaborated with Yannic Fonderie. Yannic gave the album its very own vibe; pushed the songs to a higher level and filling the album up with musical little details.

The summer of 2006 was one the most creative ones for Tom. He traded in his guitar for a piano. And he challenged himself to make an entire album without a guitar that was his faithful companion over the last 10 years.

The ground basis for the most recent album ‘Hilite Hotel’ was there. And Tom went looking for a kindred spirit, someone who also likes to take chances and possibly lift the album to a higher level. This brought him to David Poltrock (Savalas, Hooverphonic, Monza) with whom he already worked 5 years ago on the song ‘Slowly”. Together they channelled all their passion and energy into Tom’s new songs. On this album Tom co-produced for the very first time resulting into a magical collaboration.
