I'M NOT JOKING
As a 3rd generation Japanese American whose parents and relatives were incarcerated at Tule Lake Segregation/Concentration camp, my generation very much felt the continued effects of the internment segregation experience after their release. “Redlining” certain neighborhoods for certain ethnic groups by realtors and US institutions dictated where Japanese Americans (and other minorities) could live until 1968. Today, if you see a Japanese American Buddhist temple and a Japanese Christian church in a city, this denotes where we could live prior to 1968. Consequently, there was a unique cross cultural bonding between Asian/Pacific Island Americans, African Americans, Latino/Latina/LatinX and working class Whites due to our shared neighborhoods. This often resulted in shared political, cultural, and social interactions with common goals and mutual respect (not always!). This background information is presented as a backdrop to the evolution of my stand-up comedy.
My views do not represent anyone else’s perspectives other than my own at that time 40+ years ago. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my comedy and to those who may be offended listening to it for the first time. If you find there is no redeeming value to my comedy, please feel free to use it as an example of the horrors of alcohol and drug abuse as I toured the US for seven years.”
