After the Tamla Motown group had a handful of releases in the U.K. on the London and Fontana labels up to mid-1962 their records were then released over here on the Oriole label for a year up to September 1963.

From October 1963 Tamla records were released on EMI’s Stateside record label and for the next year and a half, up to February 1965, there were about 40-odd such records, including their first commercial successes in this country. However, at this point of time, Motown music was still not mainstream.

In early 1965 it was decided to launch their own Tamla Motown record label, still under EMI. That also coincided with the first tour of their artists to the U.K. Both the tour and record label launch happened in March 1965.

I saw that tour and I refer to it in an article I wrote for the Toppermost site about The Miracles (see link at the end of this listing). Between March and May 1965 the first 16 records were released on the new U.K. Tamla Motown label. These are listed below:-

By mid-1975 a total of around 450 45s had been released on the U.K. Tamla Motown label.

On sale here, from the above list, is Shorty Long’s great double-sider ‘Out To Get You’/‘It’s A Crying Shame’, actually recorded in 1964. I bought the record when it was released and it has been in my vast collection of Soul, R&B and Blues records since.

Sadly, Shorty Long died in a boating accident in 1969. He was only 29 years old.

Both sides of the record play absolutely perfectly. Visibly, the record is better than fine, with a couple of minor superficial marks. Over 56 years it has been played and handled a few times but, as I have said, plays perfectly. I can hear no extraneous surface noise. There is no handwriting on the record and I have graded it as Very Good + (VG+).

The record is in an original Tamla Motown sleeve and it’s condition is Excellent (Ex) with no marks on it.

The well packaged record will be despatched by Royal Mail Special Delivery, fully insured, at a subsidised cost of £5.

My personal favourite Tamla Motown act were The Miracles and I was privileged to be able to see them in 1965 when they toured the U.K., along with a lot of the other top Motortown acts at the time.
