Description
RAY CHARLES AT NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL [1958] Early Pressing, c. 1960
This record is in VG/G+ condition. The cover is VG+.
The record cover announces that this recording is "full spectrum" and "High Fidelity". It has smudges and fingerprints, but no evidence of audible damage from shallow scratches. The record audio will improve markedly with a good cleaning.
The cover face has the original photo taken at the Newport festival. There are beginning splits in the cover (about 2" long, and tight) on the center top and bottom.
The inner sleeve is printed with an advertisement for Warner Bros. records and the aging paper is split at the bottom.
All of this recording was made live at the Newport Jazz Festival of 1958. It was a time when Ray Charles was reaching the height of his popularity both in the USA and in foreign countries. Various pressings of the recording were released in numerous other countries.
We date this record as a 1960 release (re-pressing of the original 1958 recording). We so so because:
1) the record has the rare white, purple and red label that Atlantic used from only 1959 - 1960.
2) the information on the cover gives a contact address that was good from 1956 through 1961. (157 W 57th St. in NYC)
Those facts offer a window of only two years for this edition, and from what we could find, there was no 1959 USA pressing, and if there were one, this might be it.
A bit more detail about the record: There is a mis-label on Side 2 of the first song. It is given on the record label as "The Spirit Feel" but should be "Hot Rod." It is labeled correctly on the back of the cover.
The Runout, or dead wax area in the center has "11537 AT" inscribed on Side 1.
This is not a common recording to find. We are glad to offer it here at a reasonable price.
Other information is in the specifications and the short comment on the record condition that appear at the beginning of this listing.
