...One of theRarest Rolling Stones'Albums in existence...the incredibly rare mispressing of the Stones' "HOT ROCKS (1964-'71).

these two versions have NEVER before, or after, been released to the public.

The versions included here are truly different...

 

It is not just a case of different mixes - these are DIFFERENT TAKES altogether. You'll detect a major difference between the official versions and the versions included here within 'five-ten' seconds of the start of each. 

 

 

'BROWN SUGAR'

This take has rhythm section pushed all the way into the foreground, to the point where bass and drums are literally in-your-face. Bobby Keys' famous sax solo in the middle of the song is COMPLETELY MISSING, and so is the 'Lead guitar Solo'! Only Keith Richard's rhythm guitar is there, and Mick Taylor's fretwork appears to be either missing or is mixed out entirely! Vocal take seems to be the same as the released version.

'WILD HORSES'

Mick Taylor's guitar, notably the intricate soloing by the end of the song, is missing. And the song itself appears to be somewhat shorter than the original released version. BUT, WOW, Mick Jagger's vocal track. He laid down a doozy! It is absolutely clear that this is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT take of the vocal track than the version on the original album. Mick sings in a superb, wonderfully dramatic, passionate, soulful manner - and a version we strongly feel as 'far superior' to the one released on regular versions of 'Hot Rocks' (same as the one released on "Sticky Fingers"). His voice here is a cross between Gram Parsons, Jerry Garcia and Billie Holiday (at first, I thought it was Gram Parsons on vocals)! YEP, Mick can 'Croon' with the best of 'em!!  The man shows here he can really 'belt out' a song when he wants to!!

Over my 14 years of being in the music business, I've heard many stories about how this rarity came to be, although never seeing a copy. Then, this year (thirty years later), I surprisingly came across this copy. With interesting curiosity, Barb and I first put the regular copy of the LP on the player, then, put this 'virtually unheard' version on the player, it was quite a BLAST!

 

It's noted that TWO other copies of this 'incredible rarity' were auctioned on eBay by an 'EXCELLENT', 'TRUSTED', 'SELLER' over the past few years. The 'Seller' at that time asked 'Bruce Eder of All Music Guide' (http://www.allmusic.com/), his thoughts on how this 'mispressing' came about. His thoughts are that this appears to be a simple case of human error. To paraphrase; it looks like the pressing plant accidently used the test (or demo) stamper which should have been discarded. Bruce should know, he worked for Allen Klein (the then manager of the Rolling Stones) and London Records as a consultant for the world renown group. I heard other theories of how this 'mispressing' materialized...an attempt by Klein to extract one last bit of material before the group established their own label...the Stones deliberately supplied half-baked takes to Klein...to...sheer incompetence of the pressing plant.

Also, people believe the 'mispressed' versions of this album are the 'first' versions which somehow made it to the store level. This is NOT TRUE. Contrary to popular belief all Original pressings of this album were good, official versions, with KNOWN released versions of these two songs. The 'mispressings' appear to be of the early-mid '70's era.

After reportedly having been duped by Klein to unknowingly sign over the recording copyrights to all of their material from 1963 to 1970, The Rolling Stones left Decca and formed their own label, Rolling Stones Records, with a new distributor. They recorded Sticky Fingers throughout 1970, releasing it the following spring. Although Klein—and now ABKCO—no longer had The Rolling Stones as clients, their fruitful catalogue was ripe for the picking and, thus, Hot Rocks 1964-1971 was quickly compiled as a double album greatest hits package...

 ...it proved to be The Rolling Stones' biggest-selling release of their career... and an enduring and popular retrospective.

  While the album carries most of the band's biggest hits during their first decade, it does drop a few of them in order to include standout tracks such as "Play With Fire", "Under My Thumb" and "Gimme Shelter" giving listeners a more well-rounded impression of The Rolling Stones' music in this era. Although 'BROWN SUGAR' and 'WILD HORSES' are part of 'Sticky Fingers', those two songs are co-owned by the band and Allen Klein because The Rolling Stones owed Decca one more single in 1970, and the band responded by submitting the unreleasable "Cxxksxxker Blues".

Keith Richards, he's acknowledged as perhaps the greatest rhythm guitarist in rock & roll.         3.  Mick Taylor, guitar work, and uncredited songwriting contributions.         4. Mick Jagger, one of the most popular and influential frontmen in the history of rock & roll.         5. Charlie Watts,  the longtime drummer of the Rolling Stones.         6. Bill Wyman, with  the Rolling Stones for three decades, established himself among the greatest bassists in rock & roll history.            7. Brian Jones, was second guitarist and multi-instrumentalist in the Rolling Stones from their formation in 1962 until just a few weeks before his death in mid-1969.         8. Dick Taylor, Although his name is not recognized by most rock fans, Dick Taylor was an important figure in 1960's British rock as lead guitarist and frequent songwriter for the Pretty Things, and has deep ties to the general birth of the British blues-rock scene. A teenage friend of Mick Jagger, he attended the same grammar school in the London suburb Dartford, and began playing with Jagger in the early '60's in the group Little Boy Blue & the Blue Boys. Keith Richards started playing with them as well, and the group evolved into the Rolling Stones, adding Brian Jones. There were getting to be too many cooks in the kitchen, and Taylor left the band sometime in 1962, though he might have been able to keep his membership if he'd been willing to switch from guitar to bass. Instead he formed another heavily R&B-influenced rock band, the Pretty Things.         9. Mick Avory, is one of the most familiar names among British Invasion drummers -- as a member of the Kinks from 1964 through 1984. At age 13, he accompanied a friend to a meeting where some of the boys had formed a skiffle group, and the one playing drums, such as they were, had tired of that role and abandoned it, and he was asked in. It was from that beginning that he learned the rudiments of drumming, and became very serious about it. Up to that time, his only instrument had been the harmonica, a result of a gift from an uncle. From age 13, he aspired to be a better drummer, and by 1962, when he was 18, he was sitting in with a bunch of guys his age, playing guitars and harmonica (mostly in a bluesy form, if not manner), who became the Rolling Stones. Indeed, Avory was one of the more notable candidates to pass through the drummer's spot in the primordial version of that band before they found Charlie Watts.        10. Ian Stewart, Lovingly referred to as the sixth stone, pianist Ian Stewart was actually a founding member of the original group, pre-dating both Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman as members. Stewart, or Stu as he was called, was one of a core group of rhythm and blues enthusiasts that frequented Alexis Korner's blues club. Among the others were Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Dick Taylor and Keith Richards, figures who would all go on to have a profound effect on rock n' roll music. Adept at boogie woogie style piano, Stewart began rehearsing with fellow enthusiasts Brian Jones, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. When bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts joined, the group named themselves the Rolling Stones and began attracting a small but loyal following.

(IMPORTANT NOTE>perhaps some (very few) will here a few scattered, very light, 'pops or light surface tics' many will not; on the whole, NO real 'pops' or 'tics' heard while 'play grading' this vinyl even with many 'soft passages').

May have been played, maybe, once or twice.
• The records are pressed on a beautiful high quality, semi-flexible vinyl. Usually, the sound on such vinyl pressings is full-bodied, bright and rich in quality.

Cover shows a small amount of corner tip wear. Front, right, bottom corner tip (only), shows the beginning of a very small 'tip bend'. On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of corner tip wear as a 2 (not significant) .

• Cover shows the smallest amount of ring impression wear; (not significant). On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring impression wear as a (1> front) and as 1 (back).
