Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three light spindle marks each side. So unusual to find a first issue of this classic with what appears to be such little usage.

Cat Number: COC 59100 [later pressings had the COC prefix changed to CUN].

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. This way above the average for this album. The last one of these I had weighed-in at 110 grams only, and these are so often very thin and flimsy.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity & Info: The title itself is moderate, but this early example is very different as it includes the first made much heavier style zip (as seen in close-up). Known as the ‘PAN’ zip as engraved into the distinctively round hole style puller part. The second issue zipper, is much smaller, around 60 per cent smaller in fact, and has a much different shape with two small rectangle ‘holes’. These original ‘PAN’ zips are far, far harder to find and often when they show are badly tarnished and often siezed-up with ‘blued’ rust. This one has survived in super shape and easily unzips to full length as seen on my other close-up photograph. The main issue on this one is the top of the front cover has a small and very neat repair – made by yours-truly. The small narrow part above the belt buckle had virtually torn off and was hanging by a thread. So I carefully and dare I say very neatly repaired this area, it now has minimal visibility. I deemed this cover to be rare enough to do this and apart from a little creasing around this area, has not a great deal else of real note to reduce it’s attractiveness. Often the victim of protective inners that catch this delicate part, so few are ever seen without creasing and serious damage to this, and other areas too. I would presume the zipper style was changed due to cost, these are not cheap lightweight zips like the replacement ones, these have plenty of real metal and looks fantastic. Later copies had the catalogue number prefix changed from COC to CUN, here more relevant to the record itself. So not for the perfectionist, but for those who want the true original first issue with the PAN zip, this is a great opportunity. The record is much heavier pressed than most and for a change, offers superb sound. Rolling Stones Records, were not up to the pressing standard of Decca, and I have heard so few of these without pressing issues or surface noise, this one plays great. The original insert is included also and a very nice package indeed.

Brief Info: The first album on the new Rolling Stones Record label and first to include Mick Taylor as a full-time member replacing Brian Jones. A wonderful album including the ever-popular single ‘Brown Sugar’ with varied material, some quite dark. Famed for it’s zipper cover which was based on an idea by Andy Warhol and designed by Craig Braun, many regard it as the greatest album cover ever made. Inside the cover and beneath the zip lies a pair of white pants and text ‘Andy Warhol - this photograph may not be etc’. Do not underestimate the rarity of the first ‘PAN’ zipper cover, they are highly sort after and unique to the UK examples, but only for a relatively brief time before being changed to the much lighter-weight style replacement. Later copies still, omitted the zips altogether. Again, I state, this has a neat repair to the narrow part above the buckle, I would imagine, like many others, this caught on a protective sleeve or the like. I would rarely offer a repaired cover, but this one is hardly a standard common one and more than justifies it. This repair is as neat as it could probably be and shows little. Clearly this is not for the cover purist or connoisseur, but many fans will be more than pleased to own it. Finding a ‘perfect’ ‘Sticky Fingers’ with the PAN zip is beyond difficult anyway, and in terms of attractiveness, this is one of the best I have seen.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear (Damage): Very High: the buckle part of the front especially is so often seen torn and even with pieces missing. I have stated this one has a neat repair to this area already. Also, few of these avoid often deep press marks and scratches to the back from being rested against other zipper covers. Although this superb design cover is a classic, it left it’smark freely on other covers that came into contact with it. It would be more than obvious these were stacked atop of each other in manufacture and distribution factories.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(-): this based on what it actually looks like. Putting a grade on a cover with a repair is not easy and the opinion is then more subjective. As the repair has been made as neatly as is almost possible to a tear on the thin card part above the buckle, it has little visibility and detracts little from what is still an impressive original sleeve. I suppose Very Good would be more accurate going by the book, but this really does look better than that. A single unlaminated cover but with a third card separator piece inside. Matt finished and this one includes the much rarer, very large, heavyweight ‘PAN’ zipper. Printed and made in England and includes the insert sheet that was printed by Richard Davis Ltd.

Cover Front: The repair, made by myself now looks more like a neat crease and has modest visibility or visual impact. There is some mild creasing to the buckle on on the bottom and a little to the right of the top of the zip. All vulnerable areas to say the least and few will ever avoid a few issues. In real terms, I consider these all to be light. The important PAN zipper is in superb condition and opens and closes freely, smoothly with minimum effort required. I have seen these actually fuzed together with corrosion and rust, but no such issues on this one. Any tarnishing is modestly light but has aged a little. These zips were not galvanised and as bare metal does, do age – here only very modestly. The actual cover itself has a few very light surface marks and very slight traces of rubbing on the bottom edge. But truthfully, little detracts from what is still a quite impressive front. One way rarer than the subsequent zipper covers, prized and in big demand. Clearly not for the perfectionist with the light wear and repair, but it will take an exceptional one to better this for fine good looks.

The Zipper: The original and first-made ‘PAN’ heavyweight and large zipper is in super condition, and still works perfectly with little effort in moving up or down. Still very firmly attached inside via the cloth surround. Minimal traces of any tarnishing and unbent, the ‘PAN’ etching is still easily visible BOTH sides of the gripper. All the teeth parts are superb and totally unaged or blemished and all work perfectly with NO sticking or force needed. The thick and heavyweight top parts are only mildly aged and looks just right for a cover this great age as I hope my close-up pictures show.

Cover Back: The back has a few light surface scuffs that only really shows under angled light. It has NO gouges from being rested against other zipper covers. So often seen with deep scratches that remove the ink and press marks cutting right into the card – this has been totally avoided. The right buttock may appear to be scratched, but NO, this is part of the actual artwork and totally correct. There is a fine hairline towards to the bottom edge that shows little. Any traces of rim rubbing or grubbiness are very faint indeed and the lack of creasing and penetrating ringwear is a real bonus on what is one of rock’s most challenging and difficult covers.

Cover Inner Sheet: From what I can see, this looks perfect with white pants and midriff artwork looking almost as made with text details mentioned above.

Top Edges: Very slight thickening and mild burr traces to the single thickness card. This being the entrance edge and few will avoid a little minor wear.

Bottom Edges: Some thickening and mild burr traces to the front. This edge in two open parts, but is not a storage area. The back edge has some fairly light rubbing, this is folded and closed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Very neat with little rubbing or wear.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression, there is some light rubbing. The ends with moderate rubbing but being white, have lesser visual impact. The text largely present with some lightish clipping or rubbing to some characters.

Corners: The corners have rubbing but retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: Not perfect of course, but still a very fine and importantly, attractive example of this early-made cover which is regarded by most as a ‘classic’. Lovely to offer the ‘PAN’ zip original too which is far rarer and less seen, also in such perfect working condition and so little worn. This elusive and sort-after original should please many collectors, but not the highly discerning – any doubts…

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the plain white, unlined solid inner has little wear at all with just one fine crease. Two immaculate window circles and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Any discolouration light and consistent.

The Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(+): No damage, creasing or tears, just mildly discoloured on the ‘red’ side to remind of it’s considerable age. Still a very nice looker, the band side looks near perfect. The text side includes song credits and musicians, and if the production is not to your liking, simply ‘turn it up’ [as states Jimmy Miller].

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed – this being one of the heaviest pressings I have ever held. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and the only marks of any real note are on side two with a pair of fine surface ones that have NO sound. Any other visual blemishes are few, fine and faint – a few small, light dulls seen under light and quite possibly there from new. I have rarely found Rolling Stones Records to be the very best pressed albums – certainly never Decca standard – and often they can disappoint for clean sound, especially the early titles. Visually a very fine record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark and classic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, better enjoyed turned up a little. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and that is unsual too. Many I have heard have had inherent crackle and Rolling Stones Records pressings simply were not up to the Decca standard they previously had. No pops or other clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, and compared to most I have heard, exceptional. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. This is the very best and cleanest copy I have heard on vinyl for ages and one I really enjoyed. This copy overall, will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. The heavy-duty ‘PAN’ zipper covered copies are elusive and do not get offered too often, and although it has a neat repair, it will take an exceptional one to better it significantly.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
