Description

Rarity: This album has solid claims to being VERY RARE for a number of good reasons. First it is a COMPLETE UK ORIGINAL VERY EARLY ISSUE with the stuck on ‘3D’ IMAGE front of gatefold, printed by Robert Stace, and the RED SMOKE inner sleeve. These features only applied to the first issues, later variants had photographs and other substitutes - this is AN ORIGINAL. Although this is an album from one of the most popular Rock Groups of the era there are surprisingly few of these genuine originals left in circulation. Following first release in 1967 there was an initial wave of buying by the ‘hard core’ of dedicated Stones fans, and there were many of those of course, which saw this peak at No. 2 in the album charts sales, but there was relatively little ‘follow through’ buying. At the time the critics, generally, dismissed it as a pale and pretentious imitation of The Beatles Sgt. Peppers album, others regarded it as the poor relation. However, in hindsight there is little doubt this criticism was wide of the mark, and did not recognise either its significant cultural contribution or its importance in the Rolling Stones superb portfolio of work. While both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards quickly dismissed the ‘Hippy Flower Power’ image associated with the album to move back to their Rock and Blues roots, clearly in evidence in their album Beggars Banquet which followed in 1968, the significance of this album should not be underestimated.
