Description
Here is one of the obscure records by a legendary rural band, THE GRINNELL GIGGERS. Information about them is scarce! I found this unattributed scrap today online: "The Grinnell Giggers were from the area around the Missouri-Arkansas bootheel, near an inlet from the Mississippi River named Big Lake [see map!]. In fact, the band took its name from a type of fishing. The band's leader was fiddler BEN TINNON, who had been born in 1891.
The Memphis session - the only time this band recorded (May 30, 1930) - yielded eight sides, most of them originals composed by Tinnon." And their banjo player was MELVIN PAUL. Two out of three. Not bad! This group must have completely dominated the music scene between Bragadoccio and Carruthersville, with side trips to nearby Cooter.
Here then, are two sides from their only recording session: "RUTH'S RAG" and "THE GIGGER'S WALTZ." What a pungent bunch!
This original 1930 "Old Time Singin'" "Scroll" Victor V-40275 is in robust V+, one would even call it V++ condition. Don't be fooled by its apparently beaten surface. That damage actually is negligible. The music comes through quite powerfully.
