Matrix Numbers: (Side 1) XARL-6271-1A; (Side 2) XARL-6272-4A
Rare First Edition with Mona credit for Side One track 4 on label AND cover, Blue Decca Box on front cover, multiple Misprints on cover and labels as detailed below.
Record has been used often by a loving owner, vinyl playing condition is very good - minor hairline scratches only which do not affect the sound. Sleeve condition is fair - multiple creases and some tears, fading and wear due to handling over the decades together with brown discolouration - proper Stones-loving patina! - however, the sleeve remains intact and holds the record securely. The original Inner Sleeve (with its Patent No. 800513) condition is very good. Please see photos to make a full assessment.
This copy is a scarce first edition because of the plethora of misprints on the labels and cover, together with the rare blue colour of the Decca label box on the front cover. There are also other differences from other releases, indicating that the estimated time of manufacture is Spring 1964. The anomalies are as follows:
- Front cover: Blue background for Decca instead of the usual black.
- Back cover AND Side 1 label: Side 1 Track 4 "Mona", changed to "I Need You Baby" on later editions.
- Back cover: Side 1 Track 3 "Honest I Do" credited to "Hurran, Calvert" (not "Reed").
- Back cover and Side 2 label: Side 2 Track 4 "Witness" credited to Bozier instead of the correct Dozier.
- Back cover: Side 2 Track 5 "You Can Make It You Try" instead of "You Can Make It If You Try".
- Outer Sleeve is a FLIPBACK COVER - the front cover folded over and sealed to the back.
- Side 1 label: Publisher (c) is "Cromwell Music" (not "Burlington Music" as in later editions).
- Both labels : No "B.I.E.M."
- Both labels: "N.C.B." to the right.
- Both labels: Red/Silver Ear logo.
- Both labels: "MADE IN ENGLAND .THE DECCA RECORD CO. LTD." header.
- Back cover: Printed in England by MacNeill Press, London, S.E.1.
- Back cover: Laminated with "Clarifoil" made by British Celanese Limited
- Back cover: © 1964 The Decca Record Company Limited, London.
- Both labels: Grooved, non-boxed Decca logo.
- Both labels: Tax Code "K/T"
I have described the record as I see it and hear it. I have played it in full on an old record player - it plays with fine sound on both sides and no jumps or skips, no background noise and only a few light clicks. There is no warping and the vinyl lies perfectly flat on the turntable.
