All I can say about this one is - perhaps the BEST psychedelic pop album to come out of the prolific Netherlands in the 60's - the Sandy Coast's masterpiece, 1969's "From the Stereo Workshop" on the Dutch Relax label. Really, if for some reason you haven't heard this album yet, wait no longer - this is first-rate, well-produced and incredibly trippy popsike - the kind you may have first heard on S.F. Sorrow, Shazam, Tomorrow or Ogden's Nutgone Flake. "Capital Punishment" opens with ominous church bells and ends with the sound of a jail cell closing. In between, it's one of the most majestic, doom-laden sad ballads in the grand tradition of early Procol Harum. Imagine "Repent Walpurgis" with lyrics. And yes, it really IS that good. "Turning 'Round the Pedals" is quintessential catchy Swinging London popsike that sounds like something Rainbow Ffolly would have put out - over a bouncy piano-led pop rhythm, the distorted vocals tell a tale of playful young romance played out on a tandem bike. Somewhere, Syd Barrett is smiling. "My Friend Abdullah" is a KILLER heavy slab of slow bluesy psych with an overwhelming feel of dread - very atmopheric. "From the Workshop" is a great funky acid-fried instrumental with some great psychedelic guitar work - imagine a cross between early Santana and that long funky jam in Pink Floyd's "Echoes". And "Innocent Girl" starts out with the sound of a baby crying and leads into an absolutely beautiful, catchy pop song over a delicate nursery rhyme melody from a little girl's music box. It's timeless pop, simple and innocent in the midst of a maelstrom of psychedelia, much like "Beautiful Daughter" fit into the Move's "Shazam". A GREAT song, and in a just world, it would have been a HUGE hit. But then again, this whole album is excellent - not a bad song on here - and in my humble opinion, this is one of the all-time pinnacles of Dutch psychedelia. Heck, it compares to most of the UK biggies too! Original 1969 pressing on the Dutch Relax label. Cover in GOOD shape - there's a small chunk missing from one corner on the back (1 square inch), taped seams and some creasing. The front cover looks fine. Vinyl plays VG to VG+ with some crackle and surface noise. NO skips, and all in all, it's still very enjoyable.
