Label Conditions: Both close to immaculate, very clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This vintage record appears hardly played.

Brief Info: A vintage copy of this beautiful Sibelius symphony. Both record and cover are impressive, the disc appearing hardly played. But like most classical records with some very quiet passages, there will be the odd sporadic click here and there. Side two has half-a-dozen or so consecutive ones but those apart, few others. Now matter how well looked after or little used a record like this will be – and always remember the record’s considerable age – the odd audio blemish will rarely not be heard. But this Decca manufactured record is superbly pressed and the odd contact sound apart, is very quiet. So unless perfection is mandatory, this beautiful piece of classical music history will be hard to find much better – this is fantastic stereo as well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): no qualms in grading an ultra flimsy and fragile cover this vast age as such. A single format with front laminate that covers all folds and ends on the flat spine on the back. Also on two very large external rear flipbacks. This has the vintage style flat spine with the text printed on the back. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd, includes the Decca style stereo pink text inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: With card not much thicker than paper, this cover is incredible fragile, hence surviving in such lovely condition is some achievement. The laminate retains lovely shine with excellent shine and clarity. Some rim impression and light dulling from the thick record is the very minimum to expect, the lack of major lifting or creasing great news. Any creasing present are few and mostly very fine near the edges and only a very small lift on the bottom left corner tip. The odd tiny chip and any corner rubbing mostly small and light. A cover that gives only polite clues of age and will never prove easy to find much better.

Cover Back: Mild darkening around the rim here-and-there and a very small stain near the bottom right corner. Little else, the back panel has barely any creasing or rubbing, the fragile flipbacks are superb as seen with clean ends with no burring, both solid and undamaged.

Top, Bottom & Spine Edges: All three incredibly thin and fragile, but virtually unworn and even still quite straight with all laminate smoothly intact.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge.

Corners: A small rub bottom left, any others tiny and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this immensely fragile vintage cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the paper almost as thick as the main cover, so for an inner sleeve this is actually quite robust. This a dedicated stereo inner sleeve made by Decca. Both window circles crisp and undamaged, the polylining intact with just a natural crease, the paper hardly creased. Mild patchy darkening only to politely remind of age, all edges are naturally intact. It has the British patent No. 80013 and with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better, a tiny pressing spot (or mark) emits the few clicks on side two as mentioned above. A very fine visual copy that totally defies its great age being very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. Viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely early record plays mostly even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. As stated, few classical records – modern or vintage – will not have a few contact sounds or sporadic click here-and-there. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record – I always expect the odd click here and there on such material. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended (unless silence is mandatory), and very good luck finding such a copy.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
